Harsh yet poetic, Jan Troell's epic saga about Swedish emigration to America in the 19th century is superbly acted by Ullmann and Von Sydov, deservedly receiving Oscar nominations for best foreign-language and best picture.

The Emigrants is a stately, pictorially romantic chronicle of the lives of a small group of peasants for whom existence at home becomes so tenuous that emigration seems the only solution.
