Also the Predictables, the Forgettables and they kinda look like the Anabolic Steroidables...
Hey Richard!Just wanted to say thanks for another fantastic, well-written (or should I say, spoke...LOL :) review! I have always been and will always be your greatest fan! And, like I said, I think that everything you said about "The Expendables" (that it's cliched, there's no story, and it's not much more than ANOTHER action flick) is absolutely right. But, like many other people have said on RT sense they knew this movie was coming out, we know what we're going for: kick-a.s.s. visuals and great fight scenes and of course, EVERY single action star ever in ONE movie! Will I be going to see "The Expendables"? Yes!!!Will I have an absolutely wicked, awesome, sick time at the movies? Yes!!!Will it be a film that I have seen before and will forget probably 1 hour after seeing it...? Yes!!!Enough said!Cheers,P.S. But, like I said, great review still, Richard! Keep at it, man!
Aug 13 - 09:16 AM
Well you gave "Eat, Pray, Love" and "Twilight" good reviews...Guess we know who wears the pants in your family!
Aug 13 - 09:27 AM
Eat, pray, love looks good, better then an action filled michael bay themed movie.
Aug 13 - 06:37 PM
Really? A movie about a woman who cheats on her husband then goes abroad to be self indulgent sounds good?LOL have fun man!

In Your Dreams
Yeah because films are supposed to take us places, remember? For instance, most people would rather go to Italy and sample the food than lie bleeding in a ditch in Columbia. Kapishe, moron?
Aug 17 - 04:46 PM
w@velength, do you go around defending the poor innocent critics from the evil brain-dead Philistines wandering around, decrying their negative reviews all day? Jesus Lord. The Expendables wasn't meant to take you places like Eat Pray Love, and if you expect something like that, fuck off to Eat Pray Love.
Aug 18 - 01:24 AM
@Robert F. LOOLLL I totally agree with this guy
Aug 13 - 09:14 PM
What, Richard Roeper is still alive? It's interesting how quickly he faded into obscurity once he could no longer live on Ebert's coattails.
Aug 13 - 10:56 AM
Maven, stop. OK? Just seriously, stop.To call Richard Roeper (who is a TOP, TOP critic BTW) an obscure person who lived on Ebert's coattails is not only rude but just plain stupid.Sorry, but RR is a critic who generally (meaning about 80%) is loved and respected as a critic on this and every other movie site.Go back into your hole. P.L.E.A.S.E.Cheers,

Another mindless review from a biased, uninformed, ignorant wannabe who lacks journalistic integrity and who dismisses anything with a shred of masculinity as shallow or meaningless. The Expendables is an extraordinary film with a great story, solid performances all around, an abundance of depth and substance, intense and exciting action sequences and just enough tongue-in-cheek humor. Just because it isn't filled with a bunch of pseudo-intellectuals sitting around moping about some leftist political agenda or going on a self indulgent rant about existentialism, people such as this "critic" discard it. Critics are cancerous and are utterly worthless. I would put as much stock in their opinions as I would the promises of politicians.
Aug 13 - 12:36 PM
ah. a copy and paster. what, a, fag.
Aug 13 - 12:47 PM
Be honest, Balboa6 - you were literally crying in real life when you went from review to review copying and pasting this, right? Like actual, red-faced, sputtering, heaving sobs.
Aug 13 - 02:48 PM
I suppose it didn't occur to any of you intellectually inferior imbeciles that the same statement applies to multiple reviews.
Aug 13 - 08:23 PM
I would say the intellectually inferior person here is the one that has to copy and paste the same comment on every negative review he can find, because he drained his brain composing it. Don't worry Balboa6, give yourself a week or so to recharge and recover from spelling all those big words and you should be fine.
Aug 15 - 05:53 AM
Max, let me ask you something: if a handful of people were making unfounded comments about something and you jumped to the offended party's defense, are you going to compose a totally and completely brand new argument for each and every individual? No, you're going to use the same argument. When I see the same exact negative review over and over and over again, my argument is not going to change, so why should I compose an entirely new argument whenever I am responding to THE SAME EXACT THINGS?
Aug 16 - 05:40 PM
Easy there Balboa. Don't get too caught up in the copy and pasting that you paste your same comment twice.
Aug 17 - 01:15 PM
Don't assume other people have the same lack of creativity / lack of reading comprehension as you, Mr. "Every Argument Is The Same Because They Disagree With Me". How embarrassing for you.
Aug 17 - 04:49 PM
Funny how you don't have the brain capacity to write a review that is anything other than a incoherent ramble. Maybe you should address each critic's concerns instead of copy-pasting a reply to each?Maybe you'd like to go more in depth about some of the deeper themes that all these smarty-pants critics seem to have missed?
Aug 14 - 10:10 AM
Funny how you missed the fact that this is the "comments" area. This is for commenting on reviews, not countering them with another review.
Aug 14 - 11:35 AM
Balboa6 said "This is for commenting on reviews, not countering them with another review."Weak. Seriously weak.
Aug 15 - 05:55 AM
"Just because it isn't filled with a bunch of pseudo-intellectuals sitting around moping about some leftist political agenda"Are you kidding me? This movie had leftist agenda stamped all over it: the anti-waterboarding scene, the tones of "evil American government", oppressed people rejecting American ideals (communists). Sure, it was an action movie, and a good one, but it is leftist propaganda all the way. That's it's depth and substance.
Aug 13 - 08:12 PM
Somebody being waterboarded in a film does not make it leftist propaganda. It all depends on the context. Waterboarding isn't a good thing, so no matter who it is happening to it's not going to be pleasant. The point wasn't to make a political statement.
Aug 13 - 08:27 PM
Of course it was, why else insert it in the movie, over "traditional" Hollywood torture? Face it, The Expendables is exactly the leftist action flick Hollywood would produce. It takes the pro-union/pro-worker leftist viewpoint against America's stance against communism throughout South America (the CIA is once again behind a drug fueled, oppressive, militaristic regime). Che could've been a consultant on the film.
Aug 13 - 08:58 PM
But the US was behind dictators to prevent communism, and Russia was behind a bunch of blood thirsty communist radicals, there really was no true good side in the cold war, I mean we were the ones who gave power to the Taliban.
Aug 14 - 01:23 PM
So anything that has "torture" in it is leftist or propagated? So then would you say the Saw franchise is leftist as well? What a joke.
Aug 14 - 11:37 AM
Kind of hurts to have absolutes used against you, doesn't it? ::pats on head::
Aug 17 - 04:52 PM
i don't think your crusade against the "intellectually inferior imbeciles" who dislike this movie is working, Balboa. I'd pack it up and move onto defending a Stallone movie that isn't awful
Aug 18 - 11:58 AM
People, Richard is right. This movie was horrible.

OOOOOH! Burn! Go kill yourself.
Aug 23 - 01:07 PM
this is why critics suck and ruin moviegoing. when movies like inception wich is a direct rip off of 15 other films including shutter island gets praise yet films that are at least enjoyable action yarns are tarnished. It seems that critics who arent fans of horror or action films shouldnt be allowed to critique horror films but that wont happen lol. horror and action films get the most grief from pompous critics who's idea of a great film is that fabulous french movie "genie ate marmalade and crumpets" (fictitional movie, just using this as comedy commentary). Id rather see 80s action movie fans review a movie than a critic like Ebert or Reoper. I personaly thought the trailer alone for expendables looked far better than horrible "salt" or "inception (god awful rip off of 15 movies including dark city, citizen kane, dreamscape even the rosebud whisper of citizen kane and of course looked exactly the same concept as shutter island only with a scifi premise, imaginary wife/mind* endings/distorted reality and all). In all not impressed with this review and this is why people need to be thier own critics.
Aug 13 - 08:24 PM
you're actually saying that inception is a rip off but this is original?
Aug 17 - 05:04 PM
Up Yours! I watched it and I LOVED IT!!!!
Aug 13 - 09:15 PM
He liked A Nightmare on Elm Street so his opinion doesn't count....But he liked Inception so...Ughhhhhhh mind exploded.
Aug 14 - 12:36 AM
Quote: they kinda look like the Anabolic SteroidablesHaha, not exactly benevolent, but in Stallone's case I certainly can't argue!
Aug 14 - 06:39 AM
This review shows how out of touch critics are with target audiences. More than half of them sit around complaining that it didn't have enough character development or story, but they forget the purpose of this film. This was a throwback to the 80's with over the top action and carnage. It's a film that set out to make a hard R and give the middle finger to all the studio heads who have spent 2 decades selling out to PG-13 so that they can try to make a little extra money during the theatrical run. To complain about this movie being nothing but action is like watching a porn and complaining that there wasn't enough character development. When was the last time you watched a comedy and complained that it was too funny or a horror movie was too scary? That's what they are trying to be. Critics today seem to be too stupid to evaluate a film on what it sets out to be. I doubt a single fan of this film will complain for a moment when this doesn't get a "best picture" nomination, but no one behind this movie tried to make the next Braveheart. This wasn't meant to be a 2 or 3 hour epic invoking deeper emotions. They simply gathered a dozen of the biggest action stars cinema has ever seen and spent 100 minutes killing people in the coolest and most creative ways possible. No one can deny that they succeeded at this.
Aug 14 - 08:34 AM
A film's purpose should be to be a good film. It's target audience should be everybody. Nice strawman, but you're going to have to try harder than "lol they didn't get it" if you want to be taken seriously.
Aug 17 - 04:53 PM
That's one of the dumbest statements I've read on here. "a film's target audience should be everybody"...???? So The Exorcist should have been made more 'kid friendly' to be considered a good film??? Or since there will always be a large group of people who never care for Sci-Fi, we should completely ignore how groundbreaking The Matrix was, is that right? No film will ever be all things to all people. You're nothing but a sell-out if you think all movies should be white-washed to generally appeal to the masses. I'm glad to see that Stallone was smart enough to not fail in trying to be everything, but rather succeed at being the very best he can be at what he does best. I'm also glad that he had the balls to not water his film down to keep you fairies happy. If you didn't like the movie - then grow a pair!
Aug 19 - 07:57 PM
No, Wavelength had you pinned down from the get go. You used a strawman and got called out on it.
Aug 23 - 01:08 PM
Wavelength had me "pinned down?" exactly what I thought... you would want to see Wavelength "pin me down," wouldn't you. Look, I didn't expect people like you to enjoy this movie. It wasn't meant for the limp wristed- although I'm sure you appreciated the eye candy. Go sing your praises of Eat,Pray, Love on another discussion board and save this one for guys who are into babes, bullets, and blood. And what is "strawman?" Is that gay-talk for something... i don't get it.

Aug 26 - 06:43 PM
"You'se a fagget!"Pretty much what I expected from the fucktard fanboys.
Aug 26 - 06:44 PM
I cannot believe people are actually defending this movie. Even an action-filled, testosterone-oozing movie needs to not be this brain-dead!
Aug 15 - 11:20 PM
Is it so hard to understand that this film was made for pure entertainment? It's not supposed to make you think or cry or anything except blow your mind with the kick-ass fighting and all the firepower. If anyone walked in the movie theater expecting a well-written script, that person must be quite a clueless fella. Just go in, sit down, and enjoy the awesomeness of seeing all those action greats together on the same screen.
