RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: Expendables 2 Brings Home the Action

Plus, a heartbreaking anime, a famously flawed film, and a Tarantino collection.

This may be the week of Thanksgiving and Black Friday, but it looks like home video distributors didn't much care. There is so little coming out tomorrow that we're limiting our selection to just four entries. Thankfully, they're all fairly notable items, so see below for the full list!

The Expendables 2

65%

The Avengers weren't the only team of larger-than-life heroes duking it out on the big screen this year; we also had another classic action star royal rumble in the form of The Expendables 2. Stallone relinquished directorial duties to Simon West to this follow-up to his 2010 hit, and he added a few notable names to lineup, like Liam Hemsworth, Chuck Norris, and Jean-Claude Van Damme, the latter two of whom were quite conspicuously absent from the first film. This time around, the team is commissioned by CIA man Mr. Church (Bruce Willis) for a simple salvage mission in Albania; of course, it's never that simple, and soon the Expendables find themselves pitted against an arms dealer (JCVD) over some hidden plutonium. Critics overall enjoyed this second outing more than the first, despite the fact that proceedings felt a bit familiar. At 66%, you could probably do worse if you?re looking for an action-packed shoot-'em-up.

Grave of the Fireflies - Blu-Ray

96%

Studio Ghibli is best known for the fantastical animated films of Hayao Miyazaki, but one of its first features was a somber anti-war film set in Japan during the tail end of World War II. Grave of the Fireflies tells the story of orphaned teen Seita and his 4-year-old sister Setsuko who, having lost their mother to a bombing, first move in with a resentful aunt and then strike out on their own in an abandoned bomb shelter. As Setsuko begins to suffer from malnutrition, Seita resorts to desperate measures to try and provide for her. Achingly sad but haunting and powerful, Grave of the Fireflies is perhaps one of Ghibli's most beautiful and touching films, even if its themes might be too heavy for very young viewers. At 96%, it's a brilliant example of animated cinema equally capable of touching hearts both young and old, and it's available on Blu-ray for the first time. Unfortunately, no extras.

Heaven's Gate - Criterion Collection

47%

Michael Cimino's epic, loosely based on the Johnson County War, was famous for several negative reasons: the production quickly and almost immediately fell behind schedule, it far exceeded its initial budget, Cimino himself was reportedly unreasonably obsessive and controlling, and the film bombed both with critics and at the box office. All that said, however, it remains a beautifully shot and brutally unflinching take on the Western, and it has enjoyed some critical reassessment since its initial release. This week, the Criterion Collection releases a full director?s cut of the film, supervised by Cimino himself, on DVD and Blu-ray, including bonus features like an illustrated audio interview with Cimino and producer Joann Carelli, as well as new interviews with star Kris Kristofferson and others. It wasn't the most ideal follow-up to the Oscar-winning The Deer Hunter, but viewers at least will be treated to Cimino's original vision.

Tarantino XX - 8-Film Collection

Quentin Tarnatino's fans tend to be pretty devout followers, so it's difficult to imagine many of them haven't picked up a copy of most of his films at one time or another, but for those who haven't, there's Tarantino XX, an 8-film Blu-ray collection of his work to date. The only title included here that Tarantino didn't direct is True Romance, which he wrote, but otherwise all of his films, from Reservoir Dogs to Inglourious Basterds is included here, along with two extra discs of new bonus content. Since we'll assume most of you are familiar with his movies, let's get into the extras: the first disc includes an almost-five-hour roundtable discussion, moderated by Elvis Mitchell, between critics about each of QT's films. The second disc contains a terrific 2+ hour career retrospective featuring lots of talking heads, a Jackie Brown Q&A session, and a handful of trailers for Django Unchained. Sure, there'll probably be another all-encompassing set somewhere down the line, but for now, this is a pretty good deal for any QT fan.

Good god, you are right. I even "corrected" myself after initially writing Liam. Brain fart.

Because "The Expendables 2" didn't performed better than it's original predecessor they should go and get a new director! And I can never forgive Michael Cimino for bringing down "United Artists" for directing that awful "Heaven's Gate" movie, I've actually met some people who liked that movie but the thing is that 'sad' films in general are normally the only films they like anyway! And can anyone really trust anything what Cimino has to say these days anyway since he's nothing but a bad investment to films in general for a director should only be granted more money only by how well s/he does on the previous film - Cimino is no Spielberg and Nolan! My feelings about Cimino offering a commentary about his boxoffice flop "Heaven's Gate" is once a narcissist always a narcissist!

The director wasn't the reason the film underperformed. Sequels thrive on the reception of what came before them (case in point: Hangover 2 raking tons of cash) and the reception for the original wasn't that great. It was a similair case to Valentine's Day of the same year, just replace "all your favorite rom-com stars in one movie" with "all your favorite action stars in one movie". That angle gave the movies tons of hype yet because neither was well recieved by audiences it caused a drop off for their sequels (though at least Expendables 2 didn't drop off as badly as New Year's Eve).

"The director wasn't the reason the film underperformed" Well, I wasn't talking about "The Hangover" films, I was only talking about "Heaven's Gate" which a book was made about this which was balmed solely on him the director Michael Cimino. I mean if what I said wasn't a fact that the film underperformed then a book wouldn't been made about it called "Final Cut : Art, Money, and go in the Making of Heaven's Gate" written by Steven Bach! Were you even around when the company that originally finances the James Bond movies became bankrupt solely because they invested heavily on Ciminoès vision asa director of Heavens Gate!

Well, in the case of "The Expendables 2", the expectations wasn't as high as it's original predecessor and upon seeing it felt that the director was adapting to what the actors wanted than what made the original one appealing since it dwelled more on "one- liners" than on innovative action! Did you see both "Expendable" films? And what was your opnion about them?

Expendables 2 might be fun. I didn't care too much for the theatrical cut of the first one, but the director's cut changed my opinion of the movie. Might be worth a rental.

I've been curious to see Heaven's Gate ever since hearing about it. ". . . full director's cut of the film, supervised by Cimino himself . . . " Great. If I'm going to see it, I might as well go with the 11-hour version.

And thank you, Rotten Tomatoes, for reminding me I still need to get Jackie Brown to complete my Tarantino collection.

This is actually a 3 1/2 hour version (actually 3 minutes shorter than the standard "uncut" version!), but it was supposedly completely reassembled and edited, so it's supposed to be closer to Cimino's vision. On the bright side, I'm sure it'll still have beautiful shots on Montana.

"Grave of the Fireflies" is a must buy. I'm interested in seeing the reconstructed cut of "Heaven's Gate", although I would have preferred an actual commentary over an 'animated interview'.

I'm stocked on QT (yes, including NATURAL BORN KILLERS, a film still pissing people off 20 years later), and I'm not sure a five hour critic discussion (fun as it sounds) is not worth the box set price. Still, I'll see if I can take a look at the extra discs eventually.

Grave of the Fireflies is one Ghibli film I need to see but it may be a while until I see it. I heard the subject matter is hard to swallow and the ending has devestated many.

I've been wanting to see Grave of the Fireflies for ages, so it's great that it's finally on Blu-Ray.

Might check out the Expendables 2 eventually. I'm not expecting Avengers level quality or anything, just something that can offer a lot of dumb entertainment for a couple hours.

It's amazing how the impact of Heaven's Gate can still be felt today. Aside from it bankrupting the studio, it arguably killed a lot of freedom directors used to have with their films and nearly killed the western genre.

Grave of Fireflies for me, I loved that film since I was a little boy. I was never a huge fan of the Expendables which is ironic I suppose since I love most the actors 80's work.

I don't know a thing about Heaven's Gate so that could be fun to watch. I allready have these tarintino movies. Is there a movie where a guy builds a time machine to go back in time so he can tell his younger self not to buy certain films so it wont feel like a huge waist of money when the BLU-RAY collection comes out?
