The Face Behind the Mask (2003)
Considering the miniscule budget and grim nature of this film it is surprisingly stylish and well-wrought as it tells the tale of a Hungarian immigrant whose face was horribly scarred after a fire. To conceal his disfigurement, he wears a hideous but expensive mask. Things go from bad to worse, when he gets involved with gangsters. Soon afterward, he falls in love with a blind girl. He is happy for a while but then a terrible tragedy takes it all away.

this is a fun low budget thriller, with lorre somehow morphing from innocent immigrant to criminal mastermind in what seems like no time, after being badly burned in a fire. of course he falls in love with a beautiful blind woman as there's always one around in these cases. a scene where he tries to get tough with another gangster recently released from prison is pretty funny. the ending is really greatMore
This story of a man sinking into a life of crime out of desperation seems like it should be good, and it does start off well. But the ending just didn't sit well with me. No fault of Peter Lorre's. It just seemed awfully vindictive for a character who seemed like an otherwise decent human being.More
