Exactly, nived. I always wondered if this guy EVER knew how to properly critique a film... now I'm for sure he doesn't.

It's quite easy to call it the worst movie of the year if you didn't understand a single thing about it. This is a masterpiece of science fiction.

Switching on your brain before watching this movie may have helped.

"I didn't know Rachel Weitz was supposed to be the tree." Are ya kidding me? How much more f***ing obvious could it have been?? MORON.

You guys need to get out of your ivory towers. The Fountain was not the worst movie of the year (RV, Stick It, Click), but it wasn't the best either.

I'm sorry, I deeply respect Richard, but if he thinks The Fountain is one of the worst movies of the year, I cannot say this is a statement in good faith. There is so much brainless, effortless garbage made a year, this cannot possibly even be a quarter as bad as he is making it out to be.
I never like when people see an "art house" (well, more appropriately, more like an avante garde film or formalist) it most be arrogant. I admit, I didn't like this movie the first time. I too thought it was unfocused. But I began to realize, it wasn't unfocused, I didn't understand what was going on.
After reading several reviews and analysis, I put the pieces together and liked it my second time. The third time I loved this movie. This is an epic poem of perhaps are most basic desire - to see our love one live forever. Tommy, like all of us, must realize even if he wins the battle, he will lose the war.
Mr. Roeper, I admire you, but I believe such rhetoric is more deserving of other, less ambitous, less daring, less brave, and less thoughtful movies, even if one doesn't like the movie.

Gandalf, I agree with everything except the grammatical errors.

It's good all you commentators have each other to agree with all the time.

Richard... you just don't get it, do you? Go back to watching things like The Pirates Of The Caribbean, or Cowboys Vs. Aliens, this is obviously past your grasp.

It is one of the worst movies of the year. I understood the scientific aspect of the movie as well. It doesn't take a brain to understand the plot. All it takes is brutal patience to sit through the poor acting, choppy dialogue, and melodrama. It's a movie that works on assertions, saying it's intelligent and trying to fool people into believing it is.

what a noob to not like this film. .

bit too far there richard, but it certainly was a godawful film and an effort to sit through

If I have to read "it took 3 viewing for me to understand it," one more time, then it's clear to me that you haven't read very many novels. Bad acting. I'd say half the acting is bad. Bad transitions? If moving from recurring shapes and images throughout time is a bad thing, then basically you've just pissed on every poem ever written.
It's a movie that moves between creativity and objectivity from the microscale to the macroscale. In the face of the inconceivable a man has to cope with the inevitable loss of his wife and the fact that no one can escape death no matter how far science progresses. Admittedly, it is not one of Aronofsky's best films, but since when did it become a bad thing to make something deeply personal and wish to share it with an audience? I admit that I could have done less with the tree of life stuff and would have liked more science fiction, but what Aronofsky did was combine history, myth, and science fiction into one creative endeavor. Whether you like it or not is irrelevant to the message of the film. Some parts annoy me. Some parts touch me. But, overall (even if overreaching) the film tries to connect existence. It's a film for US not for Aronofsky. I appreciate this overwhelming attempt... think about the other shit that's out there.
