what about Spike Jonze and where the wild things are or hbo's adaptation of and the band played on that forgot about half of the book, some of the most important people and events, and added really bad cameos to give it a big studio feel? please check out my website at www.drowningindarkwater.com

Top of my head: "Forbidden Planet" and Paul Mazursky's "Tempest" are pretty unorthodox adaptations of Shakespeare's "Tempest". Ken Russell has made some very unorthodox adaptations of "The Devils" and "Lair of the White Worm". "Wild at Heart" and "Ninth Gate" made pretty major changes to their respective novels ("Club Dumas" for the latter). "Adaptation" is a very unorthodox adaptation of "Orchid Thief", "Naked Lunch" chose to adapt the "Interzone" collection about the writing of the book rather than the book itself. "Thin Red Line" alters dramatically from James Jones' novel. And, of course, the granddaddy of them all, "Apocalypse Now" leaves Conrad's "Heart of Darkness" behind in flames.
