Thanks largely to the brutal honesty of its subjects, The Ground Truth transcends the protest genre and delivers a much broader cautionary tale.

While the military has mastered the art of turning young men and women into heartless killers, it hasn't bothered to consider what happens when these soldiers return to America. Confusion, depression, and guilt are but a few of the fluctuating emotions that torment these citizens on a daily basis. And those are just the emotional scars. For many veterans, the reminders are devastatingly physical. Like Robert Acosta, who lost his right hand in combat. Or parents Joyce and Kevin Lucey, whose son Jeffrey committed suicide after returning home and finding that he couldn't silence his inner demons. But Foulkrod's main objective with THE GROUND TRUTH is to expose the problem that is threatening to become an epidemic: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Since this affliction is invisible and difficult to diagnose with factual objectivity, it makes it even more troublesome. Unfortunately, the American government appears to be hiding behind this excuse in order to avoid nursing this massive contingent of tortured individuals back to health. Over the course of the film, we meet many more veterans who express their disappointment with their government's baffling lack of support, and see rare footage of recruits in boot camp, where previously calm and rational individuals are turned into ferocious, animalistic killers. No matter what side of the debate on which one stands, it's impossible not to be affected by the stories shared within Foulkrod's sobering documentary. [More]

Reviews for The Ground Truth
Doesn't include interviews w/vets that came back 100% pro-Iraq war, still these soldiers who on our behalf went over & fought speak w/frankness and sincerity. we ought listen.
Patricia Foulkrod's film backs itself into a Support Our Troops corner, elegizing the soldiers. Iraqis do not figure in, except as bad memories.
The way that Foulkrod unveils dozens of horrifying stories makes this a powerful and effective anti-war doc.
I did (and do) feel a profound feeling of sadness for the men and women who sacrifice the hearts and minds for a cause that cares not an iota for them.
A vital reminder of the monumental, lingering toll war takes on its participants.
Wrenchingly powerful documentary on Iraq war veterans' suffering and their political awakening
Patricia Foulkrod's documentary is barely a work of art, visually unseemly and struggling for a significant throughline, but as a polemic it has the urgency of stray sniper fire.
Foulkrod's powerful Iraq War docu sidesteps the usual "why we are here?" rhetoirc and facile Bush-bashing, instead focusing in impressively direct and immediate ways on the harsh realities of being a soldier.
What sets The Ground Truth apart from standard network news coverage and even previous documentary efforts is the scope of footage Foulkrod has access to.
The substance of the movie is potent, and so powerfully presented by those who have fought and are still fighting a controversial war, that the message of Ground Truth cannot be dismissed.
A stunning statement on how we mistreat our best and bravest young men.
