You're right, there's nothing funny about a morbidly obese slob. If I were to see a movie starring one I would probably not like it very much. But I'm a person who has seen Bridesmaids and The Heat, movies which by the way star not a morbidly obese slob, but a hilarious, talented, young actress, who may not look like Scarlett Johannson, but why would she want to when she uses her size so well to her advantage?
I'm a person who watches a fair amount of comedy shows and movies, and I'm usually pretty critical of a lot of them. There is usually a lot of bad writing, repetition, bad acting, or all three. But Bridesmaids and
The Heat delivered on at very least the acting front, and they made Melissa McCarthy one of the top comedy actors right now, and rightfully so.

Great movie and she's cute and hilarious. 95% of the audience in the theater laughed tonight, that means it's a success as a comedy i think.

Jesus guys .. Johah Hill is a fat guy and no one mentions it .. GET OVER IT. John Goodman was great in The Big Lebowski but no one says he wasn't good because he's morbidly obese?!?!?! She's a real person .. and there are lots of fat people out there living lives.. SHUT UP ABOUT WEIGHT. There's nothing funny about looking old either .. but there were some very unflattering shots of Sandy Bullock looking OLD ..

walked out of the theater. McCarthy's act got old in 10 minutes. She over played it and Sandy made a mistake on this one. Too bad, was looking for a laugh. At least the popcorn was good and we got our money back.

When did unrealistic, short sighted plots filled with profanity constitute comedy? The funny parts did not require &^%$ or ^%$&#@. If the "F" word is hilarious then anyone can be funny. I was taught that if you had to cuss it was because your vocabulary was so poor you couldn't say anything else. I guess that if one accepts equality then women need to sound like drunken sailors and illiterate bums. I don't accept that premise. I was taught to have respect for the "fairer sex" and that didn't include having a trash mouth.

As for Mr Eason's point. I agree, profanity does not constitute humour(English spelling, just in case you choose to pick on my grammar as well), though a well placed expletive can be humorous.

Sandra Bullock is always watchable, but Melissa stole the show. The writing was excellent and Melissa's delivery was pitch perfect. I don't understand the obsession with her weight. What in the world does that have to do with anything????

Jul 6 - 03:07 PM

Tanya Seebach

Tanya Seebach

If you are only focused on her weight or body type then you don't really see or understand how funny Melissa McCarthy is. She's been funny for a long time...way before Bridesmaids...and I thought she was great in that...and funny. And guess what...to the person who said she was only funny because she shit in the sink? What about Maya Rudolph shitting in her wedding dress in the middle of the street? Does her weight play into the roles she gets? Probably. But it is how she uses it...her timing, her delivery, etc that make her so funny. Not every fat person can do that. A lot of comedians play to their physical quirks..be it weight, height, looks, etc. The trick is knowing how to do it. I am overweight and I am extremely witty and funny but I can't do the physical comedy...kudos to MM for knowing how to both and doing them well...I think she's hilarious and very talented....and it has way more to do with than just her weight. I don't care what you look like or what your size is, if your humor sucks dead mules, I won't be laughing.

I like McCarthy. She takes the Hollywood menu of airbrushed, surgeon-scalped, 2hr a day personal training sessioned model-like female actor standard that Hollywood perpetuates and cosmetic and pharmaceutical companies cash in on, and turns this paradigm on its head. Haven't yet seen the movie but plan to. She is one of the funniest, edgiest female commedians to come along since Lily Tomlin and Lucile Ball. I'm really not surprised by some of the idiotic posts below. Some of us are just more attached to fairytale Hollywood images of women than others.

It is very telling that only two female crtics gave it a rotten rating. This movie is geared to fat soccer moms, which is why they cast that fatso. Fat soccer moms don't want to see pretty women on the screen. They want to see other cows. These movie will do well with that crowd.

Actually it doesn't set back the image of women by 50 years, because not many women would have spoken like that 50 years ago. 90% of men wouldn't have spoken like that 50 years ago, especially not if they were in law enforcement.

I agree that this movie was pathetically stupid. The plot was weak, the acting insipid and uninspired. None of these things have anything to do with McCarthy being fat.

I don't agree with the words you called her being valid as a reason someone is not funny. Chris Farley was hilarious. However, I do think her character in this movie was extremely predictable and the plot was awful. There were some SUPER hilarious parts, but also a lot of times where I was thinking, really? Or you felt like you had to wait the whole movie, "is what she's about to say going to be funny or just meh?" I think her character in Identity Theft was way more convincing. I actually wanted to slap her and grit my teeth the whole movie. She was so into her character and you could feel it, so even if what she said was funny or not, you were in love with her character. This movie felt like a 16 year old was sitting there thinking, where can I add in more profanity and dirty jokes to prove what a hard ass she is. But don't get me wrong, it was still a pretty hilarious movie.

She needs to scoop up as much cash as she can while she can. Hollywood is SO horrifying to women....misogynstic to the nth degree. Most roles for women are as just out of teens accessories to aging old geezers who have been in the game forever. The ignorance and stupidity is beyond belief and we accept it, allowing our daughters to be influenced about their role in life by utter sexist crap! At least McCarthy shows us that now and then a woman can once in a while, for a little while, make the money that a John Goodman, Jackie Gleason, or so many other obese males can! Cash in while you can McCarthy!

I don't remember any crotch shots Alien at all. Couldn't I say the same thing about men too? We got movies like Twilight showing a bunch of shirtless dudes every five minutes, a ton of rom-coms with guys getting shirtless and nude all the time. There are also plenty of films with male crotch shots. Hell, in Django Unchained last year there is a close-up of Jamie Foxx's dick. It really just depends on the type of movie. Alot of the time the story calls for nudity and other times it doesn't. In Looper it was to show the similarities between Suzie and Joe because they both had jobs that required them to do things they weren't necessarily proud of. While in Pain & Gain it was used strictly because Michael Bay wanted some boobs in the movie. Do you see what I'm saying? No movie (well most at least) has sexist or misogynistic intentions really. It's more about the genre of film and who the target audience is.

James G. Bond - Near the end of the film Ripley is putting on the space suit and she is in underwear including those teeny bikini undies with the string sides an there is a lengthy FULL SCREEN shot of her hip, thigh and 'v' area as she is sliding into the suit...completely and totally sexist and unnecessary...added nothing to the film, just for male titillation - I guess they felt men would be intimidated by the film so they added in some shots like that here and there.

Right, that's why I said 'most' roles for women. I never claimed ALL were. Eastwood's film was loosely based on Katie Dallam, lesbian boxer who was short and tubby - and an artist and intellectual. Hollywood and Eastwood, doing their sexist best, turn her into a dirt poor, gorgeous woman - thereby marginalizing us all.

Blindside is seen as another 'white savior' movie by many, and many Black people and was accused of thus being racist.

"Ultimately, the film?s screenplay and Sandra Bullock?s performance misses the opportunity to connect with the tradition of the few white women who have stood against racism like Mary White Ovington, Lillian Smith, or Viola Gregg Luizzo, and instead draws on the much broader tradition of white women perpetrating paternalistic racism, set in stark contrast to portrayals of black women as unfit mothers. This kind of storytelling, repeated again and again throughout the culture, is just not that interesting and it certainly doesn?t rise to the level of ?art? in my view. It does, however, seem to draw a crowd. ?The Blind Side?is this season?s ?surprise hit? at the box office."

Nor do I see how some pretentious, bourgeois, privileged white women who decides to be a do-gooder amounts to a strong woman figure. She is owned and paid for by her rich husband and obviously spent a lot of her life shopping for clothing, jewelery and mindless fluff.

If she's such a talented actress, then why doesn't she show it in this movie. I haven't seen any of her other work so I have nothing to compare it too, but if this is her gold standard acting then I don't wish to see any more of it.

Nothing I've said mentions her weight, or lack of Hollywood sex appeal. I appreciate character driven acting and clever dialogue and plot in comedy, of which there is very little in this movie. I actually felt my IQ wither under the constant bombardment of stupid. Luckily it returned after I walked out of the movie.

As for 'Doing something with her life'. Please can you ask her to stop now? At the very least convince her to do something else with her life, where we aren't being inflicted with her public presence.

Are you kidding Pope Magoo XVIII? Chris Farley made being a morbidly obese slob hilarious. Melissa McCarthy may not be that funny, but being a fat slob is kind of funny.

She was hilarious in Bridesmaids....but The Heat, Identity Thief, and The Hangover, Part III proved that she is a one trick pony and has no range whatsoever. She has played the exact character every single time. So, she's gone from Oscar nominated performance...to Adam Sandler baboonery!

Lauren Sternhagen

Which is not really the case at all. She started acting a long time ago, was on a critically acclaimed show (Gilmore Girls), is now on her own show, Mike and Molly, and played a slob with heart and a successful career (important distinction not often made) in Bridesmaids. Plus, she is the opposite of those characters in real life, brimming with class and very smart and funny.

Jun 26 - 12:58 PM

Jeremy Konrad

Which would be all well and good if she did not only take roles like the ones she has had lately. She actually is a good actress as evidenced by Gilmore Girls and ruined it by taking a role where she shits in a sink.

Lauren Sternhagen

Except that the one scene you describe was countered with scenes in which she became a very good, loyal, and rather wise friend. These parts aren't really one-dimensional just because there are crass elements in them. Beyond that, her movie career is now what, 2 or 3 years old? She's been in 3 movies now.

Oh, Father! You are a true ignoramus. Fine if you think she is not funny but why do you have to bring her weight into your comment? Her comedic gimmick is her weight. That's the entirety of her comedic appeal. All she offers is "I'm fat so I'm funny." If she wasn't fat, people would realize that she actually doesn't do anything funny.

I agree with that, but they do try to emphasize Melissa McCarthy's weight in her films. They basically make her a big slob in all her movies. John Goodman, while funny for other reasons also experienced this at one point.

It really doesn't matter whether you're talking about her weight or whether she plays the same character over and over again. Most comedians play the same roles over and over because it's funny, Ferrell, Galifianakis. It just works. What makes McCarthy funny isn't the intellectual level of her humor. Humor after all is about letting loose and can span all levels of intellect. What makes McCarthy funny to me is her comedic timing and confidence despite the fact that she's fat in Hollywood and while that can be jarring to some, it's wildly entertaining to the general public right now.

There is no comedic timing with her....a true comedian can be funny in different situations...Tina Fey and Julia Louis Dreyfus have great comedic timing. McCarthy just screams and cusses and hopes somebody laughs. It'll get old real quick and she'll be left in a series of box office bombs like Galifanakis....Hangover and Due Date were his only real successes....everything else has suffered due to his lack of doing anything else.

This movie looks idiotic. Just a Hangover for women. Bullock reprising her character from Miss Congeniality and McCarthy being McCarthy. and when they go with a poster of McCarthy doing something as simple-minded as carrying a rocket launcher you know the movie is crap.

Guy, just because an actress hasn't played a dramatic role doesn't mean she doesn't have range. She hasn't fully displayed her range to us but she did have a few dramatic scenes towards the end of Identity Thief (although it was a terrible movie) that I thought were played very well by her.

You strike me as the type that is constantly amazed Two and Half Men doesn't sweep the Emmys. Physical humor needs a counterbalance, or else everything degrades in a hack 3 Stooges routine. McCarthy has thus far only shown herself as being capable of playing a fat slob.

Yes because any man who doesn't like a female comedian, no mater how unfunny she might be is automatically a sexist. It has nothing to do with the fact that McCarthy is a women, its just that she's painfully annoying and unfunny. I have the same problem with several male comedians as well Kathie.

Jun 23 - 12:04 AM

Mollie Brown

Mollie Brown

and most of the male comedies out there are awash in high school humor, and have only a few amusing moments (from a female perspective). Get him to the Greek, and similar films I find grotesquely juvenile. I think there are definite taste differences in comedy between men and women, and it is ok.

Jun 24 - 11:31 AM

Alex Aston

Alex Aston

I wouldn't really put, McCarthy on a pedistal above those male comedians your mentioning Mollie. McCarthy is pretty much just as juvenile as them in terms of the gags she delivers. Plus i don't think its fair to go after male comedians as mostly juvenile in comparison to female comedians, i find that American humor by average usually depends on juvenile humor to get its jokes across anyways. Bidesmades depended on the same potty humor that the Hangover relied on.

Jun 24 - 02:51 PM

Mabel Johnson

Mabel Johnson

it is your opinion, and entitled to it Alex yet she was fantastic in the Gilmore Girls and in Samantha Who? and made every role her own. Lets dismiss the fact she is female. Jackie Gleason was a slobbering fat ass by your definitions one dimensional etc. actor comedian. Take away her weight which is a worse crime in Hollywood the drug alcohol or wife/spouse abuse and less forgivable. Ms McCarthy is hilarious and if anyone saw her SNL skits they would know and appreciate that genius. If you don't like her fine but don't publically attack her for her weight or anything else because it is essentially bullying at its most cowardly form and forum.

Jun 24 - 02:01 PM

Alex Aston

Alex Aston

I already dismissed the fact that she was female Mabel, that was the point i was trying to get across to Kathie Johnson. Plus i did see McCarthy in SNL and i still don't think she's that funny. She essentially uses the same character over and over again to generate laughs and shows little to no versatility in her comedic performances. For me its like she's trying to hard to get the audience to laugh instead of trying to authentically get her humor across. I think its low of you to resort to name calling, referring to me as a bully and a coward. I never resorted to calling either yourself or McCarthy by any names, I simply stated the my critique of her as a comedian and why I think she is overrated (an opinion I believe I am entitled to). There is a fine line between criticism and bullying and I don't appreciate you putting them in the same bandwagon. Plus I never mentioned anything about McCarthy's weight, so comparing her to Jackie Gleason is essentially irrelevent.

Jun 24 - 03:02 PM

Alex Aston

Alex Aston

Plus Mabel if your still calling me a misognist, i'd like you to actually quote the comments I've made and tell me how they are misogynistic. ALl i did was critque McCarthy as a comedian, I never once said anything about me not liking her because she was a women. Just because I don't like a female comedian, it doesn't automatically mean that I'm misogynistic. Its like saying i'm racist because I think Tracy Morgan is a terrible comedian.

Jun 24 - 03:09 PM

Mitchell Nash

Mitchell Nash

Mabel, Alex isn't the person that started this thread, so he isn't the person who said anything about her weight. That makes most of your comment moot as it has nothing to do with the reasons Alex dislikes her performances. It also has nothing to do with her being female. Your comment boils down to this:

"it is your opinion, and entitled to it Alex yet she was fantastic in the Gilmore Girls and in Samantha Who? and made every role her own. Ms McCarthy is hilarious and if anyone saw her SNL skits they would know and appreciate that genius."

Your only rebuttal is that she was fantastic and genius in other stuff, which may or may not be true [I haven't seen them, but what I have seen of her she's recycled the same character].
