Looks pretty generic.

The trailers don't have anything special about them. It's looks like another run-of-the-mill comedy that we've seen a hundred times already. But, of course, this is just speculation.

Well there's an obvious difference between this and most buddy cop comedies in that there's two women. Can't think of any others like it in that regard but feel free to name anything I might have missed.

The Heat? White House Down? World War Z? The Internship? I'm getting so sick of these summer movies. The only reason why they exist is to make money. Most of the "Filmmakers" now a days are solely focused on technical aspects of film and this is why the film industry is purely a business and doesn't care about new story telling ideas. If the movie is complete shit but has a successful box office then they just don't care. Producers are afraid to bring something new to the table, there just so worried about the money. It's all about advertising... trailers are made to deceive you and once movies like "The Heat" has had its time in the red box no ones gonna give a shit and it will be forgotten.

This year, we have yet another big CGI robot piece of shit hitting the screens, and we complain about a movie like this looking generic. It's an old formula, yes, but when done properly the buddy-cop theme makes for some of the BEST action/comedy movies out of Hollywood.

Action movies now are far more bland and generic than they ever were before. Every fucking minute it's a new Superhero CGI infested flick, or some robot crap like Transformers. To be honest with ya,...this seems more fresh now than ever in the current atmosphere of child-oriented fantasy shit murdering us with loud noise and CGI eye-candy.

Pacific Rim is not Transformers. It is a Guillermo Del Toro film so I can almost guarantee you that it will be a great film. We have plenty of original films coming out this summer as well.

A predictable buddy cop movie seems fresh to you?

Yes it seems fresh to me. Try to apply comprehension to what I typed above.......It's "fresh" when every fucking movie surrounding it is the same generic shit. Or do you believe the CGI-driven Superhero and Robot action formulas still need some more milking ?...since we've only had like a couple million of them the past decade or so.

Your argument makes no sense because buddy cop movies have been done a million times before. The only reason people like this movie is because of McCarthy. It even says so in the consensus.

Superhero movies are fun and enjoyable. Pacific Rim is going to have a great story I guarantee it. It's Guillermo Del Toro. We're fine.

Alex,

Let me see if I can explain myself a little better for you. I know the buddy-cop formula is not "fresh" for crying out loud. It's been around for a long damn time. However, I'm calling out the hypocrites who keep bringing that fact up as some kind of negative toward the genre, when in fact,...many other equally fickle and over-used sub-genres under the "Action" blanket never get heat for doing the same thing ( no pun intended ). The mind-numbing eye-candy "Superhero" flicks that has FLOODED cinemas the past decade, and IMO is completely RUINING the action genre, never get any flak, even though they are essentially the exact same friggin thing retold movie after movie after movie after bombastic CGI-saturated movie. The costumes and characters change, but the core stories and plots and the incredibly predictable way they are told and unfold remain completely identical. Many of them are nothing but bland/vapid, PG rated CGI spectacle, with faux moralizing all espousing the exact same message. But you don't hear anyone criticizing this genre for being done to fucking death. I'm tired of the super-invincible hero that must put his/her super gift to save mankind above his/her own self to battle and conquer super-villainy. I'm tired that nearly every so-called action movie nowadays is that same shit. And then there is the even worse CGI robot spectacles and disaster crap foisted upon us by the likes of Michael bay and Roland Emmerich and that ilk. Now what other "fresh" action formulas we got now exactly besides superhero fantasies and the I Robots ??.. The "Spy" action/thrillers ?....done to death as well with the Bournes, Bonds, Salts, MI movies, etc, yet no one's complaining about having enough of those. So I don't take people seriously when they call the buddy-cop genre "generic". ALL the action sub-genres have been exhausted plenty of times before, it's pure hypocrisy to single one sub-genre out just to sound "hip". To me it's a pretentious and irritating attitude.

Personally, I like my action movies on the more grounded/grittier side involving more character interaction and "relatively" plausible scenarios, as opposed to large-scale special effects-driven fantasy and mind-numbing OTT CGI nonsense for the kids. I'm sure millions of others share my view as well. I prefer the gritty/graphic/bloody fights and shoot-outs commonplace in the R-rated actioners. The salty dialouge, human characters, and somewhat plausible plots as far as these movies go. The gangster/crime action/dramas and police action/thrillers aimed at adults ( not the whole family ) that we hardly get anymore. Black Rain, Executive Decision, Die Hard, Ronin, etc, and yes, the buddy-cop flicks like 48 Hrs and Lethal Weapon. No it's nothing new, but like every other formula, there's the good, the bad, and the sometimes excellent. It's not about how many times a familiar formula's been done, it's about how good you can make that familiar formula work. The goddamn hypocrites and sickening pretentious hipsters on the other hand, they just completely off-handily diss every single one of these movies that come out without ever watching a single one of them. YET they would go and lap up the umpteenth time some fucking emo boy dons a costume and a cape and jets off to fight super villains and save the World in the face of his personal white-bread issues. They have no problem lapping up a Bond # 30, or a Mission Impossible # 10, or a Transformers # 40, or a Fast and Furious # 100, or a Super Boy # 1000, but Jesus Christ, ....let one single buddy-cop action or comedy come out and it's ""Oh been there/done that, there all the same"". THAT'S the attitude that pisses me off.

So if someone prefers bland noisy CGI spectacles for family time ( and that's pretty much all they make anymore for the big screen anyway ), then fine. They can go watch the 10000th time a freak comes to grips with his superpowers and saves the World and enjoy. But for god sake, there are still those of us that actually like the real-life looking down-to-earth buddy-cop kinda action movies, and we hardly blasted well get them anymore. We take them for they are and accept that they either work or they won't like any other formula. That's why I say this movie is "fresh". What I mean is it's fresh by comparison to what is the accepted norm now. A bunch of indiscernible fantasy spectacles with sanitized/bland characters, action, and dialogue. Figuratively speaking, in a basket full of grapes that all look and taste exactly the same, the Heat may be the one cherry I and other action fans might be looking for. I'm gonna go see it tonight and I look forward to seeing one of my favorite action movie formulas on the big screen once again. Even though this is obviously more comedy than action, I still welcome the break from the empty bling of the CGI giants for the ADHD crowd.

"YET they would go and lap up the umpteenth time some fucking emo boy dons a costume and a cape and jets off to fight super villains and save the World in the face of his personal white-bread issues." You sound pretentious as hell. If you don't like those films then don't see them. There are plenty of good indie and arthouse films out right now that you can see instead. It seems as though cinema in general isn't for you if you're complaining about entire genres.

It is a dialogue driven movie, it isn't about the plot arc, it is about the relationships of the characters involved and it is about the comedy, that has slapstick elements, but is also original and insightful.

Oh well then we have no problems James. I only turn the attack around on the Superhero flicks to show how pointless it is to slam a movie for using a standard and familiar formula, when in fact it can be done for just about any type of movie. There's nothing original about anything out there right now. I don't "hate" the spectacle flicks like superhero movies, they're just not really my preferred choice for entertainment. I'd still give some of them credit for being well above average for what they are.
