The Help is a high-functioning tearjerker, but the catharsis it offers feels glib and insufficient, a Barbie Band-Aid on the still-raw wound of race relations in America.
It sounds like you need to get over yourself. Your review is hollow and meaningless. It is a period piece that shows where we've come from. When something is good we pass it on. If it was all that you reported I would agree with you. You are so far off. I think this review is being filtered through your white guilt. I bet you love Dances With Wolves.
James H. is really Kathryn Stockett, commenting on every negative review of THE HELP. The weirdest thing about this movie/book is why on earth it is os popular. Most domestic servitude today is done by peoples from the Caribbean or Suth/Central America: are whites, who I believe FEAR African-Americans now, nostalgic for a time when blacks feared them???
@Brandie m.: I don't think Katherine Stockett cares enough about any movie to care about what people think about this one. Plus, she's sick to death of The Help anyway. I doubt she will ever even see this movie unless somebody forced her.
This movie isn't about race. It's about relationships. Lol you don't even know the main theme of this movie, yet you think you're worthy of criticizig it. And about race relations, please! Give me a break! There are enough racial guilt movies out there and, honestly, all they do is make me want to scratch the word "racism" out of the dictionary.
Any one who thinks this movie is about relationships and not race also must be one of those people who claim they do not see color. Thats just BS. We all see color and we judge people based on their skin the lighter you are the better. This culture and others " with the white is right motto" even has people of color judging each other based on how white they are. The book was good but safe like the movie. However considering how few movies are made about race and racism in America this movie at least puts some light on the issue which lives on today probably worse because it has become more institutionalized.
