it's sentimental when it needs to be sentimental, and the crude is the attitudes of some of the whites at the time

Your use of the word "crude" in that way marks you as someone who went to one of the better schools. Satire is a powerful weapon against social evil. "The Help" pulled off the blow brilliantly.

Have to agree with the reviewer on this one. The film didn't need to be so oppressively saccharine to get its important message across.

With reference to the reviewer's use of the word "crude" I took it to mean that he found the film poorly formed... I don't think he was making a comment against the offensive traits of some of the nastier characters.
