No no, my friend.

$90-$100m, with a much longer life than lets say something like Twilight movies that gross sheds loads first weekend, then tail off quite quickly. $350m-$400m total with all the different ways to see the film/higher ticket prices to see it in certain ways.
Internationally Tolkien is massive so should open strong and put out a $700m+ total. Depends though if people are put off by the 3 films idea.

Id be surprised if it makes anywhere near the numbers tentpole franchises usually do, given the time it's being released in. I think it might do between 80 and 110 million.
Dec 11 - 03:49 PM
The highest December gross to date is I Am Legend, which brought in $77 million in 2007. Given inflation and perhaps a larger fan base for The Hobbit, it should hit $100 million. Some negative reviews may bring this down. I'll hedge my bets and say $85-$105 million. Final domestic gross: $350 million. FInal WW gross: $1.1 billion.

These films, and particularly those with some sort of innovative technology backing them, usually do wonderfully overseas, so I reckon this film could very well make something close to 1.4 billion worldwide instead.
Dec 11 - 03:51 PM
even harry potter 8 didn't make it to $1.4 billion, and that had a LOT of hype and pent up demand. however, we'll have to see. i figure the hobbit will cross the billion mark, but not sure how far over.
Dec 12 - 12:56 AM
total American Box office: 380-420
Worldwide box office: 950- 1.05 billion
the higher numbers are if they're lucky.
Dec 11 - 12:37 PM
Maybe $120-140 million. Over-all domestic run could be $350-380 million. Worldwide? $900-950 million.
Dec 11 - 09:58 AM
At least 70 million for opening weekend. I'll be shocked if it opens to anything less. For overall anywhere from 270-300 million.
Dec 11 - 08:45 AM
it'll be easier to tell once more sites track the hype.

540 + 280 = 975? ;)

i'm confused. how much do you predict for opening weekend domestic? how much for opening weekend overseas (combined to get worldwide opening)?
how much do you think domestic total? how much do you predict for overseas total (combined to get worldwide total)?
he's asking for opening weekend. no movie has ever come close to $280 million domestic opening weekend, which is why i asked if you meant 'worldwide' opening. :P
Dec 12 - 12:59 AM
i'll toss some numbers up into the air.
$130 mil dom./$230 mil overseas/$360 mil worldwide opening
$360 mil dom total/$790 mil overseas/$1.15 bil worldwide total
Dec 12 - 01:03 AM
He's asking how much for this weekend domestically The Hobbit will make, as an estimation.
I guess about $78.4 million.
Dec 11 - 03:11 PM
