Why does Gandalf hardly use his powers?

well... except when he fought Balrog, he conjured up some force field, or when he dueled Saruman in his tower, he used the Jedi Force with his staff. But in any other situation, he resorts to swinging around his staff and sword, with ineffective spinning moves. USE YOUR DAMN POWERS MORE! Lazy ass wizard ...

Gandalf is basically a Demi-Deity (i.e. Maiar) like the other wizards (istari) that are sent from the Undying Lands to contest the power of Sauron. He is bound by the Valar and in general by Eru to not use his great powers except to contest other great powers (i.e. The Balrog, Saruman, Sauron). He has to be careful for not to use his great powers for several reasons. The first is that there is a balance of things. If he abuses his power, he could fall into Darkness, like the Balrog, Sauron, and Saruman did). Secondly, as an Istari, it is his duty in the third age to inspire others, especially the race of man which is foreordained to rule Middle Earth, as the elves will soon leave the shores of Middle Earth. In essence, he's training Aragorn, Eomer and even the Hobbits to rule the world justly and fairly. Once he "died" (someone of his order doesn't really die as long as they are in the light and grace of Eru), he was sent back stronger with more of his essence by the Valar. His order was purposely weakened and made to wear the guises of old men to keep them humble. But since the other wizards had fallen or were lost (i.e. Saruman, the blue wizards and to an extent, Rhadagast), he was sent with more of his natural powers as he really was the last hope and guidance the Valar could offer. And he proved himself true through his acts of sacrifice and servitude. But still even as Gandalf the White he tried to practice restraint.

My post wasn't criticism, I just like making fun of stuff like this, because I'm a huge LOTR fan.

And then uneducated Harry Potter fans think Dumbledore could beat Gandalf in a fight. Look, Dumbledore's a powerful wizard and all, but if the two were to duel without putting limits on their powers, then Gandalf would totally pwn Dumbledore.
