Movie Info

In this beautifully mounted historical drama, Angelo Pardi (Olivier Martinez), an Italian soldier, is fleeing his country in 1832. After the fall of Napoleon, Austria is swooping down on Italy to take control of the nation, and like many patriots, Pardi is hoping to escape to France and fight for their freedom abroad rather than submit to Austrian rule. However, as Pardi discovers upon arival, an epidemic of cholera is sweeping the land, leaving death in its wake and causing most people to be fearful of strangers, who may well be infected. As he tries to outrun a trio of mercenaries who have been hired to take him back to Italy, he finds himself accused by a group of villagers of infecting their water supply. Trying to escape would-be captors on all sides and searching for refuge in a rainstorm, Pardi finds a house and takes shelter inside. Unknown to Pardi, Pauline (Juliette Binoche), the lady of the house, is at home, but to his pleasant surprise, she welcomes him cordially rather than sending him away. It seems that Pauline's husband is missing, and as she desperately wants to find him and Pardi needs to escape to friendlier circumstances, they travel together through the French countryside, hoping to avoid both the disease and the tragedy travelling in its wake. Reportedly the most expensive French production ever made at the time of its release, Le Hussard Sur Le Toit (released in the United States as The Horseman on the Roof) was nominated for ten Cesar Awards (the French Oscar); it won two, for Best Cinematography and Best Sound.more

Production values count for something, and it's a good thing, too, because this French period piece takes two hours and then some to reach its conclusion without reaching even a trot.

Audience Reviews for The Horseman on the Roof

The Horseman On The Roof, is a lovely foreign film starring Juliette Binoche and Oliver Martinez.

This gorgeous movie was set in the cholera period which wiped out the whole of Europe in 10 days. Juliette Binoche, was gorgeous as ever. The thing about this movie though that it's seems to be a romance but you don't see it anywhere but just hints of it and feel the sexual tensions between the 2 main characters. Rather disappointing for some but it's that exact same formula which makes it such a beautiful movie to watch. To top it off, it was filmed in the French countryside which is so breathtaking that you could just watch the movie for the cinematography alone. All in all, it's a superb movie in the tradition of finely French costume dramas.

Bad ending - BAD! They don't get together? What the hell! Oh that's right there's the "hope" of a future reconciliation. Whatever. And I have to say this, with respect mind you but, omg - every character I've ever seen Juliette Binoche play has totally annoyed me and pissed me off! She's so irritating and pathetic! Here he is trying to help her and she causes problems with her stupidity every single time!!! Run away Olivier, run away!!
