Box Office Guru Wrapup: Hunger Games Wins #1 Spot for Third Time

Summary

North American moviegoers made The Hunger Games the first film of the year to spend three straight weeks at number one as the runaway blockbuster easily topped the Easter frame and shattered the $300M milestone in the process. 1990s nostalgia led the comedy sequel American Reunion to open in second place and the 3D re-release of Titanic to bow in third. Only one film fell into the normally wide range of $1M to $10M this weekend as a handful of pics accounted for almost all of the business over the holiday session which was about even with last year's bunny session. Good job to The Hunger Games! It was a solid movie and it deserves its top spot. Also, to everyone comparing it to Battle Royale, Battle Royale sucked. It was a terrible movie with bad acting and an even worse story line. People need to realize that two stories can share a similiar trait, but they can still be completely different. Hunger Games is a solid movie while Battle Royale is violence sprinkled with more violence.

Mixed opinions on this one. My wife read the box, and found the film slow going, stating that it was a disappointment having read the book, which was much better. In all fairness, this is usually the case with the limitations of film time and budget.

Personally, I didn't mind the slow pace to the film at the start. What irritated the hell out of us throughout most of the film though was the awful camera work. Picture watching a film, where thoughout half of it, the camera is shaking so badly, all you see are flashes of movement and suggestions that either the camera is being dropped or there's some action happening.

I can only suggest in future, the cameraman should not be taking a kicking too.

This is sometimes a tactic that is used where action scenes are sub standard - you mask the fact by zooming right in and shaking the camera around, so no one can actually see it's sub standard. The tradeoff is that in a film with many such scenes, the effect is irritating.
