Critic Review - San Jose Mercury News

This is intelligent filmmaking, and a provocative moral fable. It may not be perfect, but it stands as one of the better, most realistic movies about the way we elect our leaders.

This movie tells us nothing new. Same story that has played out in this country since its conception. The movie has no emotion and in the end leaves you wondering why you just wasted two hours of your life for something read about on the internet everyday.

You felt no emotion?

Not even when Steven is in the car at the shadows of the raindrops hitting the windshield are forming around his eyes and he is listening to his messages? Or the father talking at the funeral? No emotion is pretty harsh...

I found it difficult to feel emotion, even during this seen. Gosling's character was just as, if not more, willing to get blood on his hands and exploit others. Just because it bit him in the ass, doesn't mean he wouldn't turn around and screw those around him. While I thoroughly enjoyed the film, and disagree with Steve's comment, not once did I feel bad for Gosling.

the political intrigue runs rampant through this well crafted film, not exactly a thriller per say but still has some elements of that dark corruption we've come to know so well in this sort of genre .. Clooney takes the helm with a confidant hand, with a co-writer credit, sole direction, and even a typically captivating performance .. another one of my currently favorite actors, definitely top of my A list, Gosling, a burning ember of an actor, a skyrocketing young up and comer, is brilliant in the subtler, finer things in acting, and also gives a typical powerhouse performance .. the thing that keeps this story from going all the way, but is at the same time a certain strength, the 'ides of march' sticks to the script without so much as slight slip, which sometimes, a little surprise, even to the filmmakers, can be welcome .. that's not to say this film is without it's faults, but the measured filmmaking taking place here is not, per say, predictable, but we have a notion where things are heading and they certainly do .. i wont' give away anything but the outcome couldn't have been any other way, and i'm not saying i would have had it any other way either .. this is a powerful and moving picture that will raise your pulse and keep you glued to the proceeding as they unfold in a confident and purposeful pace ..
