Louis Leterrier Talks Incredible Hulk
Enter The Abomination!
by Jeff Giles | November 29, 2007
Discuss Article | Blog Article | Email To A Friend
He's a little over six months away from trying to make film fans forget Ang Lee's 2003 Hulk -- but, as Incredible Hulk director Louis Leterrier tells Wizard, there are no hard feelings.

In an exclusive interview with Wizard's Rickey Purdin, Leterrier explains his approach to Incredible Hulk:

"It's a fresh start because I saw there is a real fan base for Ang Lee's movie...I didn't want to offend [those fans] in any way, and also I like the movie. It was very interesting. [But] it was weaker ground to build a big franchise upon so we decided to scrap it and establish it from bases that are more comic book-based and TV show-based."

Quite the diplomat, that Leterrier. The director goes on to say that although his film retains some of Hulk's elements -- such as the single-minded pursuit of the Hulk by General "Thunderbolt" Ross -- it promises to deliver higher-stakes action. From the article:

"Obviously, General Ross is the villain, so he had to be in it...but the Abomination, Emil Blonsky, was who Marvel wanted to put in this chapter -- the first chapter of our new saga -- because he's the most famous. He's an enemy that can actually threaten the Hulk. It's very important for me that there is a danger. When Bruce Banner is Hulk, I didn't feel in Ang Lee's 'Hulk' that there was any threat. He was invincible. So with Abomination there's actually a monster that can, you know, kill him when he's in the Hulk form."

Longtime Hulk fans can also plan on seeing such classic characters as Doc Samson and The Leader when Incredible Hulk debuts on June 13, 2008.

i kind of liked the first hulk, and i admire what it was trying to achieve. sure it has its flaws (poodle monster, its a little too long, and no real villain to match hulk, at least in a physical way, and last but not least, josh lucas yelling "hit him with the foam!) but overall i thought it was solid.

looking forward to this one though, should be a fun way to spend 2 hours at the movies

The first Hulk, was good. Why do people complain when you give a superhero some background meaty story? Didn't you all liked that on Batman Begins, isn't that why you all LOVE BB?

Hopefully, this new Hulk will be good while also being a good companion piece to Ang Lee's version, which was QUITE GOOD. I agree, it had some flaws, but overall, Ang Lee's HULK was underrated. I love Ed Norton and Tim Roth, though, so this could really kick ***.

WOO HOOO! CAN'T WAIT. The first Hulk sucked because it was s,pposed to be straight up action than all soap opera-ish and drama. Hulk SMASHES, not cry about what daddy did to him when he was little.

I'm really suprised to see so many who liked Hulk here, although I'm sure a flood of haters is waiting to pounce. I liked the first Hulk too in its own respect as a single off movie. I totally agree with Leterrier though, that it wasn't too connected to the comics or good grounds for a franchise. The Hulk, as one of the Marvel tentpoles has to have a lot more American-commercialism (like the Spider-Man series) pumped into it, which is what they are surely doing. I'm excited to see how it will play, I don't even care if its over-the-top action destruction like the Transporters, its the Incredible Hulk. Isn't that what its supposed to be?

This is all well and good, and Letterier SOUNDS like he's going to be make something worth seeing.. I *want* to believe. Why hold back? two words: "Transporter [Two]," which Letterier also directed.

It's gotta be one of the worst sequels in film history. And I've SEEN Batman Returns (f#ckin' PENGUINS with MISSLES!?!), I've seen Superman 3 and 4 (in theaters! Where my fogey dawgs at?!), Batman & Robin. Spiderman 3, etc... Trans. 2 took one of the coolest, under-the-radar slick action films of the new century (Transporter 1) and made it into a Fast Food Sh#t Sandwich. Action was big and stupid (fight scenes weren't cool, just low-budget repeats of part 1), French police guy just became annoying and stupid, and the plot was just unforgivably stupid. The scrawny chick in her dominatrix underwear did NOTHING for me, either.

So anyway, This will have to blow my f#cking MIND to redeem Letterier from T2. I offer that movie as a warning for anyone here.

I completely agree with director Louis Leterrier about the first Hulk - good and interesting - but not the source material for a franchise. I am looking forward to this version. Abomination, the Leader, and Doc Sampson are good additions - not freaking gamma poodles.

I think a lot of people didn't like the hulk because it was more story than action. Honestly, I know a lot of regular, movie watchers and not more die hard movie fans didn't care for it much. I like all super hero movies, I'll probably like Seth Rogan's superhero movie. This one shoudl be be better/

I too liked and respected the first Hulk. BUT, i too agree with what letterier says about it.

Down points for me include..

Some bad CGI,

No Threat villains, although i actually liked the poodle scene, silly but they nearly kicked Hulks ***.

My Biggest gripe though, was the Transformation scenes. The TV Hulk will always reign supreme on that, I also saw that clip recently too and it was just plain scarey. It almost rivalled American werewolf in london for transformation. And in the last hulk it was the bit i was most looking forward to. I was destroyed when they just had him inflate like a big green sex doll/nutty proffessor.

The TV transform was purely menacing and underrated, the rain, the music score, the piercing green eyes, all brilliant. If they get that right at least in this Sequel i will be very happy.

i thought leterrier put it really well. i liked lee's hulk, too, but am all for a more another, more traditional, action-y hulk movie, also.

Edward Norton has the ability to single handedly salvage this movie if everything else goes down the toilet, but I don't really see that happening.

Please, let us not forget - Leterrier is the man responsible for The Transporter 2. The Incredible Hulk will most likely suck.

This is _allegedly_ the trailer for the movie... does the action look silly for anyone other than me?! :-s

I really enjoyed the Ang Lee Hulk. I just watched it again last weekend and was really struck by how great the cinematography is. The colors, and angles of shots really captured the comic book origins.

What can I say, I liked Ang Lee's Hulk but I'm really looking forward to seeing this relaunch. Ed Norton is a great actor and from the set pics floating around on the net the action scenes look big. Role on June 13. Blank Blank is right about poodle monster, what was he thinking.
