Trading the emotional theatrics of Ang Lee's Hulk for Louis Leterrier's vision of a streamlined chase movie was the right move for Marvel. Taking over the role from Eric Bana, Edward Norton stars are Dr. Bruce Banner, who's forced to go on the run when warmongers desire to exploit his transformative powers. The pacing of The Incredible Hulk never flags, critics say, and there's no shortage of action scenes. But dissenters wonder if the smarts of Lee's Hulk and the visceral matter of Leterrier's had to be mutually exclusive. At 70 percent on the Tomatometer, for an Incredible time, look up Hulk.
What's Happening?
M. Night
Shyamalan hitting new Tomatometer lows, that's what. The director once
bestowed as the next Spielberg stumbles in rehabilitating his post-Lady in the
Water reputation:
The Happening,
starring Mark
Wahlberg and
Zooey
Deschanel on the run from an airborne toxin that causes people to
spontaneously off themselves, is getting the worst reviews of Shyamalan's
career. Critics claim the interesting premise gives way to stilted performances
and line readings, bombastic moralizing, and scant plot development past the
first act. At 13 percent on the Tomatometer, The Happening is a
non-event.
"Sorry, Zooey. Not a vintage shop for miles."
Also opening in limited release:
- Encounters at the End of the World, a documentary from cinema's craziest living legend, Werner Herzog, is at 92 percent.
- Baghead, a comedy/thriller from those darned mumblecore kids, is at 100 percent.
- My Winnipeg, from cinema's other kook cult director, Guy Maddin, is at 93 percent.
- Beauty in Trouble, a Czech love triangle dramedy, is at 43 percent.
- Chris & Don: A Love Story, a documentary about author Christopher Isherwood and painter Don Bachardy, is at 89 percent.
- Love Comes Lately, a drama formulated from Isaac Bashevis Singer stories, is at 67 percent.
- Quid Pro Quo, a multifaceted New York story, is at 69 percent.

(For those that don't know, the Detroit Lions are the worst franchise in NFL history. Going to a home game, people look a lot like the villain from Strangers part II) (Reply to this) |

jokerboy1991 writes: on Jun 12 2008 07:04 PM Im gonna see the hulk and the happening tomorrow. I think the Hulk will be a B movie or B , from what I have heard its not very character driven. I look more foward to that extra 70 minute version coming to BLU RAY or Edward Nortons cut. I hope I like The Happening, I am an M. Night fan so Im gonna say its either gonna be a B movie or a D movie. I mean The Village and Lady got panned, but I kinda enjoyed those. I hope he has something come out in the next few years that will be considered great like 6th sense, signs, or Unbreakable. If The Happening turns out bad, I will still say to myself hes on a bad streak he will bounce back to greatness someday... (Reply to this) |

martinscorsese25 writes: on Jun 12 2008 09:28 PM i hope they release that ed norton's version in dvd... they said "incredible hulk" has great action but is less smart than ang lee's hulk.. i heard that ed's script was more detailed but was recut cause marvel want more money and want a fast paced so that kids won't get bored and will probably see it again... so that's why we get a GOOD hulk movie rather than what i think will be better than iron man and will be up to the same level of Spiderman 2 and batman begins... ooowwww i also heard ed norton and director Louis Leterrier refuse to promote for the movie because, as what i said before, their version of a much more detailed hulk has been cut... Ecs5001 writes: on Jun 12 2008 09:39 PM The biggest problem with Ang Lee's version is that there was TOO MUCH of that story driven smantzy pantzy crap. When we go into a hulk movie they're two words that define what we want to see and thats HULK SMASH. (Reply to this) |

vaodsi writes: on Jun 13 2008 12:17 AM wow...... Roger Ebert gave the happening THREE out of FOUR stars. I'm totally seeing it now. he gave hulk 2 and a half i'm not shocked at the happening's reviews though. i knew it would be flushed down the toilet. i told my friend last week that it would be 10 at lowest and 30 at highest. but hey...... in this world of remakes and sequels i will choose Shymamlan's originality every time. What's funny is that all the critics say Shyamalan is pretentious because he tries to emulate Hitchcock. Well...... Michael Bay is REMAKING THE BIRDS AND ROSEMARY'S BABY!!!!!! THAT is TRUELY pretentious. Bay apparently thinks his studio (platinum dunes) can make better versions of classic horror films. BAY IS SAYING HE'S SOOOOOO BRILLIANT THAT HE CAN IMPROVE ON HITCHCOCK AND POLANSKI!!!!!! dude..... It makes Shyamalan look downright humble. I'VE SAID THIS ALL BEFORE.... I'M JUST TIRED AN RAMBLING..... anyway...... it's so stupid that bay gets huge box office cash for crap like pearl harbor (lets have sex in the doorway of a parachute storage garage as army officers chase after us for hijacking their plain for a mushy love ride!) and The ISLAND (yeah...... the name is bad enough) and TRANSFORMERS ("I fixed bumblebee!!!!!!! I fixed the alien robot's voice box. My daddy taught me how cause he worked on cars...... yep. Even though that big transformer doctor with the silly name couldn't do it!!! i could!!! cause i know car engines. I'm a grease monkey with with humps..... my humps.... my lovely lady lumps. Gonna get you drunk, get you drunk, luv drunk on my lady hump!!!!!") dude bay just makes me mad cause his films are very good quality... they're just crappy films. anyway... this is turning into a silly rant. i'll shut up now. Roxtar writes: on Jun 13 2008 02:02 AM @Vaodsi Wow, someone really hates Michael Bay. The Happening was utterly disappointing (though better than Lady and Village, but that's not saying much). I would even go far enough to say I was saddened at Wahlbergs acting in it, and I love the guy. I truly feel that M. Night has hit a low. For a guy that came out with a huge bang in his career he seems to have stumbled quite a bit. I do, however, have faith in him that if he tries really hard, one day he will make another really good film, but until then his fanbase is walking out on him at a rapid rate. I haven't seen The Hulk yet, but I've heard good things. I really had no expectations for this movie mainly due to the fact The Hulk is just, in my opinion, not an interesting enough character to base a movie around. That's just my two cents, but after good word-of-mouth from my friends I will probably check this one out very soon. So if you don't listen to critics: Happening = rental Hulk = ask someone who saw it Other than that you better catch up on all the other things you people have been missing lately (Iron Man, Indy)! *cough* Speed Racer *cough* I feel so sorry for everyone who worked on that film and you guys who missed out. rt_hire_me writes: on Jun 13 2008 06:57 AM I too believe Night will make a great picture again someday, but I won't be duped again by one of his duds. Village was such a disappointment, I have to wait till his tomatometer rises again. He's making us believe he's dead, setting up the surprise ending where, with his very next picture (not Happening obviously), he proves that he was alive all this time. (Reply to this) |
