Marvel Movie Madness! Part 3: The Incredible Hulk

Summary

Jeff: I had high hopes for The Incredible Hulk. An outstanding cast, an action-savvy director, the introduction of the Hulk's most powerful enemy, and five years of special effects improvements could only help, right? Well...yeah...mostly. All in all, I enjoyed this a lot more than the first Hulk -- it boasts a terrific first act that tells you everything you need to know in ten minutes, returns Bruce Banner to his fugitive roots, and ratchets up the tension by doling out brief glimpses of our wrathful green antihero. It also benefits from flashes of humor and an obvious respect for the character's history. Back to Article

The essential flaw the the Hulk movie is "How to build a compelling storyline around a green pro-wrestler?" It can't be done.

"'Let's leave 'literally' to Rob Lowe on "Parks and Rec.'"

Rob Lowe OWNS the word "literally" in my eyes now, I can't say it without catching glimpses of Parks & Rec!

Good post, Geoff.

As far as TIH, I found it to be a bit more complete than the 2003 adaptation... CGI is a little overboard, as always, but I've come to expect that. That's what I watch Marvel films for, gotta keep fantasizing about super heroes..

Do the guys discussing this know nothing? This is exactly what I wanted from a hulk film. The action was awesome, andthe acting was great. I all around love this movie. It's "incredible".

I like the "Incredible Hulk" slightly more than "Hulk" because its running time is less tedious and the classic Bruce Banner on-the-run is centralized.

The way I know that "Hulk" sucked and that "The Incredible Hulk" was awesome, was that I bought "Hulk" on DVD as soon as it came out and I must've watched it maybe one and a half times in the five years I owned it. Every time I would reach out to grab it to watch it I would say to myself "Nah too much work, I'll watch it later." Now that I have owned "The Incredible Hulk" since it came out I think I average watching it at least twice maybe three times a year. The bottom line is that it's the Hulk not Shakespere. Ang Lee tried too hard to make something out of something it wasn't, and we all knew it in our heart of hearts but we were just too excited that there was a Hulk movie being made to get it, until it was too late. It was slow, pretensious, too long, Eric Banna was miscast and the CGI just plain sucked.

The Incredible Hulk was not only eons better than the first Hulk, but it's also one of the best comic book movies out there.

I really liked this movie. The only negative for me was the "battle on a college campus" scene. I thought that was a little over the top and non-believable. Even for a Hulk film. However, I thought Ed Norton pulled off a good Bruce Banner, and that Tim Roth, as usual, did a great Job as the villain. Let us not forget, we are talking about "the Hulk" here. You can only do so much.

It doesnt sound like you guys are even real Hulk fans. The reason TIH is amazing is because it blends the sheer bombast of the comics and the on the edge chases of the TV show.

I greatly enjoyed the first act in Brazil. I think the acting was done pretty well from everyone, except for Mr. Blue. Roth and Norton have yet to disappoint.

Liv Tyler looked amazing but I don't think she was the best choice for this movie. It needed someone with a bit more anger in her, the taxi scene was laughable.

The fight at the end was pretty disappointing. He choked him out with a metal link chain? With the strength and healing we had seen from the abomination before, I felt very let down. Not to mention the minigun chase scene in the middle of the battle, yawn. It was nice to see Hulk pull off a few moves though. The clap and smash both seemed effective.

I don't remember much of Ang Lee's version but this one was a bit of a let down.

btw, the Incredible Hulk link near the top takes you to the Thor page..

For me the biggest problem with the "Hulk" movies is the disconnect that happens when Bruce becomes the Hulk. When I watch these movies I don't feel that bruce actually is the Hulk because the two characters do not share any physical attributes, does anyone else agree that it would be easier to care about what happens to the hulk if there were some visual connection to his alter-ego? I'm intrigued by the choice of Mark Ruffalo as the new Bruce Banner because I think he has the ability to capture the conflicted emotions of the character, however, I think that an opportunity will be missed if the character that Mr. Ruffalo provides motion capture for doesn't look like one that was transformed from his human likeness. If I can see Bruce when I'm looking at the Hulk on screen it will be much easier to care about what happens to him. Otherwise, it will again feel like there is an actor playing Bruce and a group of animators "generating" the Hulk. If the two continue to feel like completely separate entities I don't see how an audience can ever care about a character like the Hulk. I realize that a Hulk with Mark Ruffalo's face would be silly but if Hulk's face looked like it had transformed from Bruce's face, I think it would be more believable and, ultimately, more easy to relate to.
