If they take the Ruffalo version and expand on it, it could work. They've already set up The Leader, or from the rumors they may be thinking of a cosmic Hulk...which, while "World War Hulk" and "Planet Hulk" may have worked in the comic, I think something like that could be a disaster on film.
Hulk needs to be grounded in reality to keep him looking powerful. Let's just see some ingenuity creating some suspense for him. Regardless of how good The Incredible Hulk may have been, I still felt at no point that The Hulk (or Banner) was really in peril. The Leader could be a good brains over brawn adversary, but we all know how that went with Luthor/Superman. The Leader needs an enforcer.
Still, the best Hulk stories had him up against Wolverine, The Avengers, etc. Which is why he was so appealing in the film. Maybe a solo Hulk film was never going to work.
