Chamaco (The Kid) is a boxing drama with an unusually high ring IQ.
Top CriticDespite a gratingly clichéd soundtrack and a violent climax that feels wholly unearned, "The Kid" has an awkward earnestness that's very endearing.
Chamaco has all the bumps and bruises of a boxing-themed film, but its story is also a tender one about a young man coming of age, and a father and son mending a frayed relationship.
We're treated to subplots involving Abner's meth-addicted girlfriend and a romance between his prostitute sister and his trainer, which leads to a scene of such melodramatic absurdity that it negates any remaining shred of narrative credibility.
