This film is based on the popular folk song "Tom Dooley." Tom (Michael Landon) and his two Confederate Army companions ambush a Yankee stagecoach and kill two Union soldiers. Unaware the war is over, they become fugitives wanted for murder. Trying to escape to the South with his Northern girlfriend, Tom is persued by authorities and captured, leading to his demise as depicted in the song sung by The Kingston Trio.more
