Critic Review - Chicago Reader

It's full of scenic splendors with a fine sense of scale, but its narrative thrust seems relatively pro forma, and I was bored by the battle scenes.

I wouldn't go that far, but they definitely don't deserve a rotten vote.

One more critic who's more interested in the 'artsy-fartsy' than in actual entertainment value. Has he even bothered to ever read the book, to which the movie was very faithful?

The movies should stand on their own.

I was bored the entire movie. My son and I slept as we were so bored. We went in with an open mind and WOW, it was closed and rested after about 30 minutes in.

to enjoy a movie you don't have to read the book beforehand. it's supposed to stand on its own. this movie certainly does. i think it's amazing and one of the best movies ever made, but you need to respect other peoples' opinions and not bash them...

You obviously haven't read the book or if you have your just plain stupid. The book is a classic NOONE argues with that fact. This movie is "full of scenic splenders with a fine sense of scale" and its faithful to the books narrative which means if you don't like the narrative your essentially saying you don't like one of the best selling and most widely acclaimed books of all time. Have you ever given a movie of this genre a positive review?

As a matter of fact, many people do argue with its status. Including Tolkien's friends. It recieved some pretty scathing reviews at first, but it has improved.

Just because a movie or a book is a classic does not make it invulnerable to critism, that being said, i disagree with the battle scenes being boring and anyways this is an adventure story not a summer blockbuster action movie.

You guys flaming at this Jon are retarded, you can't always depend on reading the book if you're going to WATCH THE FREAKING MOVIE! That's one of the points of a movie, it has a different entertainment value than a book. And I somewhat agree with this review, I found the movie's only flaw was it's speechless gaps inbetween

Just so you know, when Rosenbaum gave a full-lengthed review with a rating, he gave it 3 out of four. In other words, he liked it. It's basically Rotten Tomatoes that deemed this negative. Though to be honest, I thought the whole movie was boring, completely lacking in the human moments of the book and more about an endless sea of tiresome battles.

This guy is a critc? No he's a moron. HE GAVE A FRESH REVIEW FOR DUKES OF HAZZARD AND NOT THIS!!!!!! He gave rotten reviews for BIG, TRAFFIC, and numerous other 90% rated films. He is wrong, don't even read his dumbass reviews, unless of course you want a good laugh.

Ha, this guy is a joke. He is more interested in being pretentious and esoteric to make himself seem "smart" or having a refined taste. He likes obscure films, but he hates one of the best films of the decade.

Narrative thrust? If someone wants to argue anything about the discourse of this film then they will have a hard time. If the acting, filmography, and special effects sucked in this film-at least it'd have an amazing script with great dialog, story arc, and form. But this idiot complains about the one thing in this film that isn't flawed.

Maybe he'll choke on a rotten tomato and never write another review.

Rosebaum spends about twenty seconds writing a review; all he really manages to figure out is this is the first film of three which adapts R.R.'s classic trilogy. At least arithmethic didn't escape him.
