As said in the quote, a challenging film for serious audiences who understand what it's all about -_-

can be confounding but I think there is a reason for this: I think its a great film - greater than the reviewer realizes because he probably has not been a lifelong spiritual seeker / alcoholic. The theme is essentially the adage that all addiction, from religion to sex to drug abuse, is seeking god - though with various degrees of danger and misdirection (is it because there is nowhere to go?). The late critical scene when Freddie returns to the Master, now in England after many years, for what is the final confrontation. This confrontation is between losing the self in the identification with the whole of life vs annihilation of the self in the negation of life, nonetheless also Love - Freddie and The Master are the Yin and Yang. The Master's enduring Love for Freddie is beautiful, yet not portrayed as superior to Freddie's Love of nothing.
