a compelling, beautiful, troubling puzzle of a film
Great that you can see it as a puzzle and be open. I think its a great film - the theme is essentially the adage that all addiction, from religion to sex to drug abuse, is seeking god - though with various degrees of danger and misdirection (is it because there is nowhere to go?). The late critical scene is when Freddie returns to the Master, now in England after many years, for what is the final confrontation. The confrontation is between losing the self in the identification with the whole of life vs annihilation of the self in the negation of life, nonetheless also Love. The Master's enduring Love for Freddie is beautiful, yet not portrayed as superior to Freddie's Love of Nothing.
