Jim Henson's 11 Best Movies

Muppets Most Wanted isn't the only movie opening this week -- but it might as well be, at least for a generation of filmgoers who grew up watching Kermit and his pals on The Muppet Show, Sesame Street, and at the movies. In honor of all this Muppet love, we decided to spend this week's Total Recall paying tribute to the guy who brought them to life way back in the 1950s -- writer, director, performer, and puppeteer Jim Henson -- and, in particular, the studio he founded. Although Henson's role fluctuated from film to film, Henson's presence can be solidly felt in every Muppet-related movie -- even the ones made after his untimely death in 1990 -- and together, they form an enduring tribute to the power of imagination. Let's play the music, let's light the lights... it's time for Total Recall!More…

Five Favorite Films with Emily Blunt

Emily Blunt arrived proper for most audiences as Meryl Streep's sarcastic, binge-dieting assistant in The Devil Wears Prada -- in which she stole many a scene from the Oscar legend -- and since then has proved a versatile star across all kinds of genres, be they comedy, drama, sci-fi and most things in between. This week, Blunt co-stars opposite Ewan McGregor in Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, director Lasse Hallström's picturesque comedy-drama about a fisheries expert enlisted by an eccentric sheik to bring a river to the Arabian desert. We had the chance to speak with the actress recently about the movie, her friendship with McGregor, and some of her forthcoming projects. Read on for that, but first -- here are her five favorite films.More…

Awards Tour 2012: The Golden Tomato Awards Winners

Welcome to RT's 13th Annual Golden Tomato Awards, in which we honor the best-reviewed movies of 2011. From the biggest Hollywood hits to the most provocative indies, we've got the films that won the critics' hearts -- and probably inspired you as well. It was another wild and wonderful year for cinephiles, as we collectively bade farewell to the Harry Potter franchise while offering a hearty "welcome back" to The Muppets. In addition, we delighted at the antics of stat geeks (Moneyball) and jealous frenemies (Bridesmaids). Over at the arthouse, we empathized with a down-on-his-luck silent movie star (The Artist) and an anthropomorphized chimp (Project Nim). Which films will take home the coveted Golden Tomato Awards? Where do your favorites rank? And which of these flicks took home the User Tomato award, decided by you, the RT faithful? Read on to find out!More…

Critics Consensus: The Muppets is Certified Fresh

This week at the movies, we've got a Muppet caper (The Muppets, starring Jason Segel and Amy Adams), a special delivery (Arthur Christmas, with voice work from James McAvoy and Hugh Laurie), and a cinematic fantasia (Hugo, starring Asa Butterfield and Chloe Moretz). It's been more than a decade since the Muppets were in multiplexes, but critics say it was worth the wait: they find The Muppets to be a joyous musical comedy. The good folks at Aardman have made plenty of delightfully offbeat animated films, and critics say the trend continues with Arthur Christmas. Martin Scorsese made a family movie? In 3D? Yes, he did, and critics say Hugo is a dazzling affair.More…

Five Favorite Films with Kermit the Frog (and Miss Piggy Too!)

Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy have been big movie stars for many years, and now they're back with The Muppets, which opens in theaters on Friday. In their latest big screen adventure, Kermit and Piggy are joined by Muppet superfan Walter, as well as non-Muppets Gary (Jason Segel) and Mary (Amy Adams), who help to get the whole gang back together for a wild televised variety show that may help them to save their old Muppet Theater from the wrecking ball. In interviews with Rotten Tomatoes, Kermit (performed by Steve Whitmire) and Miss Piggy (performed by Eric Jacobson) shared a few of their favorite films (spoiler: Miss Piggy prefers her own movies), and also talked about their craziest fans and their longevity in the movie business.More…

Five Favorite Films with Kevin Clash

The subject of Constance Marks' acclaimed documentary Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey, Kevin Clash is a key player in the Jim Henson team, serving as a producer and creative consultant to the Muppets and Sesame Street, where his impossibly popular little red avatar continues to enthrall young audiences. We spoke with Clash recently as he was en route to New York's Muppet workshop, where he reflected on his experience working with Henson, how he creates his characters, and that time Elmo testified before Congress. But first, we asked him to name his five favorite films...More…
