Director's Commentary: Not Just for DVDs Anymore?
Everyone else in the theater talks through the movie...why not the director?
If you've ever sat in a darkened theater and thought to yourself "What this movie really needs is a commentary track," CHUD has some excellent news for you.
Apparently, John August and Ryan Reynolds -- the director and star of The Nines, respectively -- have recorded a commentary track for the film. Instead of waiting for The Nines to reach DVD, however, they've made their commentary available now, for free, as a download at August's official site.
As CHUD notes, this is an interesting way of getting people to pay twice to see a movie during its theatrical run. On the other hand, we're not sure there are too many filmgoers who would be willing to pony up for another ticket just to watch a movie with commentary. (If they could even hear it -- how loud would you have to crank up your iPod to drown out those speakers?)
At the very least, it's a cool way of taking advantage of technology -- and don't forget the "free" part. To read more -- and to download the commentary track for The Nines -- follow the link below.

on Sep 07 2007 08:45 AM I wonder if future films could increase ticket sales by doing this. Say, Lord of the Rings--look at that fan base. Release the commentary online (two weeks after opening) to be played with the film, then people can download that to their iPods and go again. If you hit the right fan base, like LOTR, I wonder... on Sep 07 2007 10:51 AM Smith did do it - why would theatres threaten to pull the film? (Reply to this) |

on Sep 07 2007 03:22 PM Yeah, this is JUST what movie theaters need. Now, instead of getting mad at the immature teenagers, crying babies, talking heads, ringing phones, glowing electronics, or sticky floor and seats, people can get mad at the moron next to them listening to Ryan Reynolds talk about how he filmed some random scene. THAT'S a good idea. (Reply to this) |

[/b] It would still be a flash in the pan that Hollywood would mistake as The Next Big Thing. Although, I can imagine the Science Theater troupe making commentaries available for people to enjoy bad flicks. (Reply to this) |
on Sep 07 2007 09:40 PM It sounds like an interesting concept, given the right circumstances, but I certainly don't see it taking off as any sort of important phenomenon. This is what I thought Darren Aronofsky should have done for The Fountain when WB refused to allow a commentary on the DVD. (Reply to this) |
on Sep 08 2007 03:28 PM Interesting idea... but insane. That would be just wonderful hearing muffled voices coming from the guy's headphones next to me during the quiet parts. (Reply to this) |

on Sep 08 2007 03:29 PM Now THAT's an awesome idea, HIGH SCHOOL WITH MONEY. I think I'd actually pay to see a Uwe Boll flick if I had the Science Theater guys in my ear. (Reply to this) |
