Movie Info

In The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists 3D, Hugh Grant stars in his first animated role as the luxuriantly bearded Pirate Captain - a boundlessly enthusiastic, if somewhat less-than-successful, terror of the High Seas. With a rag-tag crew at his side (Martin Freeman, Brendan Gleeson, Russell Tovey, and Ashley Jensen), and seemingly blind to the impossible odds stacked against him, the Captain has one dream: to beat his bitter rivals Black Bellamy (Jeremy Piven) and Cutlass Liz (Salma

It's the attention to detail that really shivers the timbers.

A funny, thoroughly enjoyable and oddly subversive film.

Though not as laugh-out-loud funny as their best work, there's plenty of wry smiles to be had.

Audience Reviews for The Pirates! An Adventure With Scientists

It had its moments, clear creativity and a star-studded cast...I'm glad I saw it, but it didn't hold together quite as well as some other kids' movies I've seen in the past year or so (or compared to past treasures produced by Aardman).

Pirates, Hugh Grant, Wallace and Gromit-like claymation - sounds absolutely fantastic! Truthfully, I did enjoy this comedic, farcical romp to begin with. The vocal talents are superbly funny, and there are plenty of witty moments to keep an audience captivated.

As the story continued, however, it went from whimsically odd to outright absurd. The Pirate of the Year storyline was fabulous, but when a hideously wretched Queen Victoria was introduced as a devourerer of rare animals, my opinion of the film began to change.

By the end of the movie I had made up my mind never to add the dvd to my collection, and yet there are still so many redeeming qualities. I feel the bizarre plotline let down an otherwise worthy project. My five year old daughter seemed to enjoy it, but I felt that much of it went over her head. Definitely one for the satirical adult viewer.
