Reason this isn't getting a wide release in the US?

I imagine in some way it boils down to money, but I don't really know the inner workings of producing and distributing a film. With such big name actors though, I'd expect more. Was really hoping to see the movie this Friday.

I think its not getting a wide release because Gosling and Cooper aren't very popular here in the US. They want to see more Rock and Mark Wahlberg as they are better actors

This movie actually made someone think? I found it to be horribly overrated and self-important.

I hope this quote isn't true but It is :(
"people don't want movies that are "artsy" or make them think too much. they just want the latest big budget explosion-porn sequel. the movie industry is a business. businesses make money by appealing to the majority of people. the majority of people are stupid."

This opened in Dublin (Ire) last Saturday night, in two different cinemas. Totally sold out in one cinema, probably the same in the other. I had presumed that any American who wanted to see it would be able to (given it's an American film etc), so sorry for those whose towns it's not coming to. Brilliant first part, weaker in the second and third. It'll probably do well here, though. Reviews are strong, and RG & BC are respected actors here.

Will there be another expansion in later weeks? Or is this as "wide" as it will be released? I really hoped it'd come to my town.

Most likely the movie didn't seen marketable, the big movie theater chains didn't expect people to turn out in big numbers for this, so hence it was picked up by small independent theaters. I live in NYC and only 3 theaters were playing this film. If it had a wide release, I don't think it would've made a lot of money, doesn't seem like a movie that would pack and sell out seats.

Plus, this movie wont sell t-shirts, video games and action figures....and they wont be able to make a part 2,3,4 and 5 so no one wants to put a lot of money in it.

People dont like smart movies these days. If the plot is not good guy vs bad guy, bad guy get the girl, good guy saves the girl, the end then it is too taxing on the brain for most.

Well first off that is cool as heck that Mr. Cianfrance's wife answered Greg's question. And I spent my Easter alone, I was SO looking forward to seeing it on that day. That was the only thing I wanted to do only to find out that day it comes out on April 12th! DAMNIT I CANT WAIT TO SEE THIS! I might even hit up the Drive-In in at the Swap Shop in Ft. Lauderdale for this one.

Yeah Antoine I am in the same exact situation. I was looking forward to going to this movie, but found out it isn't playing in any theaters near me. Do they wait to see how the movie does and then release it in more theaters? Any help would be great, thanks.

They aren't TRUE money bringing big names... Plus it's apparently incredibly depressing (like the director's Blue Valentine) that isn't for the mainstream...

It's not depressing. It's nothing like Blue Valentine. It's being released in 15 more cities this Friday and then to many more the following week. You should be able to see it by April 12th.

Ummm.... you're saying that Ryan Gosling ans Bradley Cooper aren't true money bringing big names???? I've never heard a more false statement. These are two of the biggest actors out now.

unless they get in a captain america or comic book suit, they wont bring big money. Americans need to the plot to be easier than what this movie will provide. Only a small number of americans will be able to relate/understand with the message the film is trying to get across.

Are you serious? I agree with Jason with that being a ridiculous statement. Here are just a couple. The Notebook and Silver Linings Playbook. I didn't see a costume on Bradley or Ryan in those movies...

Apr 5 - 08:28 PM

@Jordan, pretentious is a word without meaning. Next time try using a word WITH meaning.

@Payton Almost every actor has films that make money. However, most actors like Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper don't make money for every film they are in. Last year's The Words lost about $2 million, for Bradley Cooper. Gangster Squad lost money and All Good Things bombed big time for the Gosling.

Just because they are household names doesn't mean they bring money. I highly doubt this is going to make the $37 million it needs.

Apr 7 - 10:54 AM

Payton Woodbury

Payton Woodbury

@Greg Every single actor has a flop. I was gettin across the fact that these are bi actor names and they do bring in money. Naming a couple movies that have flopped doesn't justify your point. I could name bad movies for every single actor, but does this mean they aren't "big money actors"?

Apr 9 - 09:06 AM

Oliver D.

Oliver Davidson

Greg is correct about those bombs. Gosling and Cooper, though handsome and good actors, are not big moneymakers.... yet. Might happen. The Hangover is an exception, but that was an ensemble cast, which is now a franchise. The Words was a box office disaster. Silver Linings Playbook was out in theaters for almost six months, and coupled with the JLaw Oscar hype machine, that's why it made a lot of money- Cooper had nothing to do with it despite his solid performance. Tom Cruise and Will Smith are big money actors. There aren't that many of this type of actor left- the type of actor who will bring in 80 million plus regardless of what type of film it is. Making the big money these days is more about franchising and branding- Iron Man, Harry Potter, Bond, The Avengers, Spiderman, X-Men, Twilight, The Hunger Games, Superman, Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, etc. will always make the big money regardless of the actors in them. Twilight is a great example of this: all of those actors were replaceable. All the casting director needed to do is hire hot, young actors. Whether they could act well or not doesn't matter because teens just want to see hot vampires falling in love/having sex with each other.
