Critic Reviews for The Players

All Critics (20) | Top Critics (4) | Fresh (6) | Rotten (12)

The rare omnibus film that isn't just a mixed bag--it very nearly succeeds at being uniformly bad.

At once moving and mortifying, it carries the distinctly un-Gallic scent of the best episodes of 'The Office'.

Never much more than an extended sketch comedy whose longer segments tend to wear out their welcome.

The shallowness of people who live this way is as dispiriting as the action is meant to be titillating.

Birmingham Post

A vulgar, variable and very French take on infidelity.

While there's undeniably a streak of misogyny at its center by virtue of its flippantly unfaithful characters, there's also a healthy dose of equal contempt for them...

Digital Spy

While not quite funny enough to cut it as pure comedy, nor emotionally probing enough to be a great drama, The Players is still a pleasingly frank and, at times, guiltily daft take on a very sticky subject.

The List

I was forced to wonder: were the talkies really invented so we could listen to Dujardin beating off in a lonely motel room?

Observer [UK]

A largely unfunny, deeply misogynistic and occasionally embarrassingly poor taste comedy.

A series of pointless, boorish skits about two unrepentant lotharios.

Dujardin has charm but the script he co-wrote is crude.

An embarrassing misfire.

Stick out the glaringly unfunny prologue and you'll see the former George Valentin come good, with Dujardin and co-star Gilles Lellouche assuming a series of roles that see past the sex and explore men's impulse to cheat.

If The Players achieves little else, it proves that Dujardin can extend his range well beyond the boulevard smirk and the Brylcreemed charm.

Audience Reviews for The Players

The humour is crass, chauvinistic and immature but it makes up for it with charm. Sex and fidelity are the main themes of these six shorts, all starring Jean Dujardin and Gilles Lellouche, these two testosterone sex hungry pair play different guys in various different situations. Interesting to see that the only short directed by a Woman is the most serious and involves the Woman cheating on the man. The theme is age old, never does the film justify or condone cheating on your wife, in fact the conclusion will shock any testosterone fueled cheating Man's man and tell them what they're real motivation/problem is but this is Mediterranean man, or at least the stereotype. Their favourite TV program for many a year was the Benny Hill Show for God's sake, at least they've come a bit further than that! Jean Dujardin and Gilles Lellouche are consistently funny though and there are plenty of genuine belly laughs to be had. I watched it with my Wife and she feels the same way. Funny and well written and to be swallowed with a pinch of salt.

As funny as cancer. It sounded like a good idea for a unapologetic misogynistic -but charming- comedy, but the fractured storyline has many more lows than ups, the so called humour is as scarce as crass. Almost insufferable.

A bit hit and miss but sometimes very funny collection of short films revolving around sex, fidelity and testosterone.
