Frank Miller Really, Really Likes His Spirit Cast
Also: Dan Lauria, Bruce Willis, Carla Gugino, and Scarlett Johansson are all totally smarter than you.
by Jeff Giles | February 27, 2008

Wondering what's going on behind the scenes with Frank Miller's The Spirit? Please allow the director to fill you in.

In his latest production blog, posted at the film's official site, Miller updates fans from the set of his adaptation of Will Eisner's beloved comic, scheduled to reach theaters January 16, 2009. Calling himself "ONE LUCKY S.O.B.," the director waxes rhapsodic about his cast in this week's entry, saying (in essence) that it takes a great actor to make you forget all the hard work that goes into a seemingly effortless performance:

It only looked like wizardry when Will Eisner slid a horsehair brush across Bristol board and created the gift to the heart and eye that is THE SPIRIT. And it only felt like I was staring into Hell when Samuel Jackson calmly watched Denny Colt lowered into his grave.

From there, Miller dares all of us to "match the intelligence of Dan Lauria, Bruce Willis, Carla Gugino, or Scarlett Johansson," or to "challenge the wisdom and gravitas exuded by the sheer presence of actors like Rutger Hauer or Powers Boothe."

There's more -- a lot more -- but the gist is that Frank Miller is sick and tired of people referring to actors as "lazy" or "overpaid," and if you're one of those people, well, buddy, he's got a problem with you. Oh, and also, Sam Jackson and Gabriel Macht spent a week fighting in a mud pit, Stana Katic likes to sing for the crew between takes, and this one time, Miller apparently kept Eva Mendes waiting in her trailer for ten hours.

True but I wouldn't count him as an actor. It would insult true actors. Sounds like working on one of his movies would be a blast.

Larry the Cable Guy should stay out of movies unless he does a voice. He is still one of the best stand-up comedians (saw his show down here in 'lanta), and he should stick with that. It should now be a law that the Blue Collar guys should never do TV or movies again.

Oh yeah, this movie looks RAD!

Does anyone know if Sin City 2 is ever going to happen? The first one was so good and the possibility of a sequel use to be mentioned on RT all the time. If anyone has any info let me know.

Sin City 2 is in the works but it won't come out for a while. One reason being RR is making "Barberella" first, and second is that Frank Miller is writing new stories for the movie. Sin City 2 won't be out untill 2010 or 2011.

There is a lot of speculation about what is holding up production. Many people are claiming that it is Jessica Alba's fault for getting pregnant, which for sure is not because production has been delayed for almost three years now. Also Rodriguez was expected to be busy with the remake of Barbarella and would not be able to direct a new Sin City. But Frank Miller claims that the Weinsteins are to blame, for who knows what, possibly the commercial failure of Grindhouse (which I liked by the way.) I absolutely loved Sin City and have been painfully waiting for a sequel. But there have been talks of a late 2008 release and they supposedly have already completed a script so there is still hope.

I'm really pumped to see Frank Miller's sophomore attempt, not only due to how well Sin City was executed but just the enormity of talent in this acting ensemble. Hell, I'd stand in line just to see Rutger Hauer.

I think Bruce Willis is generally under appreciated as an actor...I really like his work, and there's no denying that he is a true "movie star."

Bruce Willis can make any terrible movie good just with his on-screen presence alone. Not many actors can claim to the same fame. The Spirit is gonna rock and a teaser for Sin City 2 (whenever that may be) will be one of the greatest moments in Rotten Tomatoes history.

On IMDB it said Sin City 2 was in Post Production and Sin City 3 was in Post production, but I doubt that to be true. Couple of things, Larry the cable guy is a douche bag, and if you look him up on you tube he used to do a different stand up gimmick. He didn't do the redneck thing. Secondly, calling him an actor is well, it's laughable. Not sure what the mist is about, being a comic book guy, I should know, but it sounds like it will be decent.

so frank miller is excited about the spirit well then whoooopie

freakin do. but it doesn't mean a blasted thing till we see at least a

trailer. I know its miller but you are sounded a bit arrogrant but i

guess after his two last comic adaptations worked, sin city & 300, so well

i guess can accept his enthuasism... for now;)

Arrogance is when you can't spell, type, or put a sentence together, and yet you are totally critical of others who can. I'm glad you can climb down from Mount Olympus long enough to 'accept his enthusiasm." Sorry, but I think Frank Miller is not waiting with baited breath for your acceptance.

sorry Mr. davenav, I didn't know I was in my language and arts

class. Sorry, I didn't know there was a rule that I couldn't express my own

opinion but Franker Miller is acting a bit arrogrant. I understand the man

has every right to be confident but in my experiences it is never a healthy

sign when a director is yelling from the mountain high how incredible his

project is going. My opinion, if I may almighty davenav, is if you are

pleased with your work, then let it speak for itself. The movie is not even

close to finishing, or premiering, so I do believe Miller is setting way too

high expections for a film that doesn't any added pressure on it. Hell, if

it was so incredible film, then why is set to premiere in January? Hey, I

love Dennny "the Spirit" Colt more and knowing Sam Jackson is playing the

sinster Octopus is all fantastic news. Yet, why can't he let their resumes

speak for themselves instead of proclaiming the information down our throats?

That is all I am suggesting and yet some r.t. bloggers find my humble

CoUcH ToMaToE's opinion worthless and irrevelant. Why? Oh, yes, my

grammatical errors which, of course I am the only one who ever does that.

So, these errors makes me arrrogrant, well then i guess we better start

deleting half of the comments on this site because with mr davenav's in

charge we need to proofread everything we post. He simply can't handle

comments without perfect grammar. Well, don't worry I'll go back up to Mount

Olympus and have much enthusiasm over how delusional and pathetic you are.

THE SPIRIT is great and I hope Miller can do Eisner's beloved strip some justice.

I completely disagree that (Hollywood) actors aren't overpaid, though. Sorry Frank, but that is ridiculous. That's like saying throwing a ball around with other men deserves millions of dollars in paychecks. Oh wait...
