Truffaut has taken this factual material and made it into a strange, moody film that belongs very much with the darker side of his work.

Looks and sounds like no other Truffaut film you've ever seen.

Its intensity is impressive and remains uncompromised by the prettifying aesthetic touches Truffaut adds here and there in an apparent attempt to distance himself from the overcharged material.

Truffaut's study of Adele is ofttimes almost clinical in nature, but Adjani brings more than enough volcanic passion to the project.

Audience Reviews for The Story of Adele H

Isabelle Adjani is outstanding as this emotionally and psychologically unstable young woman driven into madness by unrequited love and obsession, in a gorgeous period drama that also impresses for its stunning cinematography and production design.

Isabelle Adjani's performance of the young Adèle Hugo's journey from love, to obsession to madness is beautifully done and is the only real reason you should watch. The set pieces and props etc are a little questionable at the best of times, as is the supporting cast (apart from Bruce Robinson - yes, that Bruce Robinson). The story is intriguing enough to follow but ultimately disappointing in its conclusion. Sure, it's biased on real people and actual events but not always correctly. It's certainly not as good as Truffaut could be.

Not a favourite, but okay.
