Critic Review - Film.com

It's the horror equivalent of one of those cheap, straight-to-video animated sequels that Disney's always putting out: same title, same story, none of the inspiration.

The movie was great. It did what was expected, telling the story of how the alien was found and what happened to those that found it. If you compare it to the 1982 original... you are a fool.

"If you compare it to the 1982 original... you are a fool." -- ??? It's a fucking remake, you imbecile. Right, let's not compare the two versions even though the new one is CLEARLY trying its best to imitate the old one. Idiot.

Fool. this is not a remake it is a prequel. but i must agree that one has to compare the 2. and 2011 loses hands down, but i was mildly entertained buy the parts that were direct references or premises of what would take place in the 1982 thing

I liked this movie, and I think Mr. Snider's review is more than fair, even the bad parts. He gave it a C+, which is better than average. You guys, never having achieved a grade that high in school, should know better.

This was a good review. There sure are a lot of jealous assholes who like to hate on anyone who makes it to the front page on any popular movie.

I think it's time you open up a dictionary and look up "prequel". This movie is a "Prequel" in every sense and a good one, not great but good.

I watched the 80's Thing 5 days ago. Loved it.
I watched this film tonight. Loved it too.

Yes... they're similar. And I think that's pretty awesome! Their similarities are what make them work well together, even when they were done almost 30 years apart.
There are new elements which are totally unexpected - especially towards the end - while the familiar elements - conflict, paranoia and improvised tests - are inevitable and revive good moments for the new audiences who refuse to see old cinema.
In addition, it's great to see a lead which is not the typical kickass hero. She's just a regular person with brains and survival instinct.
Don't be discouraged by the poor rating and give it a try! Form your own opinion by watching it, as art is always subjective.

So your entire review revolved around it being a remake as opposed to a prequel. Did it ever occur to you that if the story really happened, how different of a story could it possibly be? They are researchers in Antarctica and believe it or not.. there's probably not a lot to do there in 1982 beside research. So, both stories are going to be very similar. In the end, I thought they did a great job tying both movies together. In fact, that was probably the smoothest transition of a prequel to the original that I've ever seen. So, I completely disagree with you is what I'm saying.

yeah, but the "researcher" thing kinda falls flat. especially when all they are interested in is the frozen alien. when they've got a perfectly good space-ship to salvage

They made a movie based on the foreshadowing of the original, the premise is awful stop defending it

Great review, spot on really. It follows Universal's and Ron D. Moore's (who seems to escape the screen writing credits) trend of turning good male characters in women for no other reason than they can't write good roles for women, so they have to steal them. Mary Elizabeth Winstead couldn't carry Kurt Russellā??s jockey strap.

The movie was exactly as you say a complete and utter remake. How you can watch Carpenter's Thing, and come up with this thing, which was wholly lacking in what made Carpenter's Thing good, baffles me.

Toy Story 2 was supposed to be one of those straight-to-video sequels. Since then Disney learned their lesson, therefore making this review about 10 years outdated.

Whats with everyone thinking the old versions are better? Acting sucked a d back then. John Wayne is perhaps the worst actor ever, kurt russell is far better now than he was back then, and... the special effects? Don't get me started on that. The equivalent of a 2 year old learning to use Crayons. I'm willing to bet this movie isn't great, but I'm 100% positive the carpenter version is laughable.... Stop comparing every remake to its original... nobody gives a damn.

hahaha ! the special effects of the original are actually WAY WAY WAY superior to the remake/prequel !! just like Jurassic Park and Alien were so scary because the animatronics were lifelike, and then OOPS JP3 and Alien 3 were CRAP because of awfull CGI !! I mean they dont fit in to the set !! its as simple as that ! you can actually imagine the director shooting an empty set and some nerd filing in the gaps an a PC !! and i actualy didnt hate this movie... just this comment.
