Movie Info

This delightful children's tale by Paul Gallico finds Mary (Karen Dotrice) and her beloved cat Thomasina living with her widowed veterinarian father Andrew (Patrick McGoohan). The small town vet matter-of-factly treats the animals brought to him with care, but he remains aloof, emotionless and distant. When the cat becomes injured, Andrew examines the pet and tells Mary that Thomasina will have to be "put to sleep." The distraught daughter and her friends plan a funeral for the doomed feline. A natural healer living in the woods appears. Lori (Susan Hampshire) has a long history of success with injured animals, nursing them back to health with love and care. When Mary realizes Thomasina is not dead (although the cat does get a mini-tour of cat heaven), she takes back her animal friend. The people of the town refuse to bring their pets to the cold hearted doctor, who can't seem to share in their compassionate concern. Mary soon becomes gravely ill, and the desperate doctor sends for the beautiful Lori, who tells Andrew that Mary can only be "healed by love." When she recovers, the grateful doctor's stone-cold heart is melted by the burning passion for the lovely Lori. Producer Walt Disney was so impressed with the performance of young Karen Doltice he made immediate plans to include her in the upcoming "Mary Poppins."more

Audience Reviews for The Three Lives of Thomasina

This is a greatly underrated Disney classic. It's funny and cute, but it also has an exciting plot. Plus, McGoohan gives a great performance. I highly recommend this movie.

Why don't they make movies like this anymore?

I saw this way back in the day. it made me want to cringe. I felt horrible for that damned cat that had to wear a bonnet through the whole film. He had this look on his face that screamed "Somebody please kill me!"
