Critic Review - Chicago Tribune

There's a decent movie in The Town, though this adaptation of the Chuck Hogan novel Prince of Thieves stretches out to a misjudged 130 minutes.

this guy is overly concerned with runtimes.

Did you know that he enjoyed 2012? That had lots of disaster (both literally and not literally) but was stretched out to 158 minutes. Some critics can be hypo-critics.

I thought it was perfect. What would you have cut? I couldn't agree more with the other comment. I was not bored at all.

I usually agree with Phillips. You have me worried, sir.

I hate when people complain about how long a baseball game or movie is. Who cares. It's better than doing nothing.

Besides, I paid good money to attend both events. I hope they last all day. If it's good, I don't care how long it is.

To me, he;s still one of the more respectable critics on here, by far. because he always has smart insights and backs up his opinions. And come on, everyone has their guilty pleasure movie that they can't help but like, and Mr. Phillips' happens to be 2012

Here's what Phillips continues with, though:

"Two hours plus change isn't long, really. Plenty of films, and not just epics, justify three or more hours. Here, though, just when the screws should tighten, we get another leisurely dialogue scene..."

It's generally getting mildly positive reviews, from the looks of things, and Phillips gives the film a mildly negative review instead (2.5/4 stars).

the tomatometer isn't really a good indicator for review quality. it only makes the distinction between which reviews are positive and which reviews are negative, not how positive or how negative. I've seen a lot of movies on here with 100% TMs and < 6.5 average scores, meaning noone disliked the movie but everyone scored it averagely.

a 7.8 is still pretty solid though.

Themidgethotel has a point. For example, I sorta liked Black Hawk Down, but I personally find it to be pretty overrated. Im surprised that its at 76% on rotten tomatoes. Still If I were a professional critic, it would still be counted as a positive review nonetheless and be added to the fresh section of the tomatometer. If you get what I'm saying.

If you must sacrifice TIME in order to convey the idea that unifies the entire film then by all means make it 123 minutes. You exagerated.

I like Michael Phillips and respect his points in his review, even though I thought this film was great, but not perfect.

This flick is paced and edited wonderfully. This guy couldn't be more wrong with that criticism. I was actually marveling the entire 2 hours at how amazing it was that there was nothing fatuous or gratuitous.

You are one of the few critics to tell it like it is. The Town is simply just not all that great. Nothing new here, just someone who has the name and the money to put out something that is fair to middling in a really professional manner. Nothing new, nothing shocking...just a good movie and nothing more. If Affleck is all that great, let's see what he can do with something innovative, fresh and intriguing. CSI Los Angeles has better episodes than this movie.

IS it just me or is a 62.5% a passing grade? Shouldn't this review be fresh? Under 60 is rotten, am I wrong?
