Got to be one of , if not the most, boring film of the year!
Seb, you leave your comments on Mr. Ranson at the door cause yours don't count..........at all. At least he can save a lot of people a boring time watching this nothing film.

Calling it pointless won't do you any good. Just because you have come to that conclusion doesn't make it true. It just helps you to stop thinking. It's not pointless.

Except for "Ryder P.I." this was the worst movie I had ever seen. Sometime i watch a movie that is so bad it is funny. This was not one of those. This movie had one redeeming quality: Although the theater was uncomfortably crowded when i entered, I had plenty of room to spread out after an hour. I am a tremendous Brad Pitt fan as well as appreciating Sean Penn and still the movie sucked. Sorry, I didn't read your review before I saw this movie. "I stayed for the entire movie!" I wanted to be able to say that. I am ready to be waterboarded.

Grand m, anyone who says that a movie is boring and doesn't back it up with sufficient evidence has no weight in their argument. Ignorant remark really.

And Ira f, maybe you should have done some research on the film before you saw it. This isn't a brad Pitt and Sean penn summer blockbuster, this is a Terrence malick picture. And if you knew anything about the director you wouldn't of seen it and probably wouldve better spent ur money on the latest transformers movie. Maybe that film would've been easier for ur head to get around.

That's a great point. I mean, no Malick film has ever focused on anything other than character buildup and the human nature. Even The Thin Red Line wasn't about war, it was about the people involved and how they handled it.

so it's now the audiences' fault for not researching an entire director's past movies if they don't like one of them. I guess that means I have to major in film before I'm granted permission to ever see movies.

I like the movie, and I didn't research anything about it, only knew Brad Pitt was in it.

hmm...this must be awkward.

What s his great point you idiot? Did you get anything? He is saying he just wanted to see a movie because he believed it must be good just because bradd pitt was in it. Always thought americans were stupid but now i also think you are complete fucking morons.

This is a very good point. What Seb is saying is that if you are not aware of Malick's past films and the ability that he has to add metaphorical, as well as philosophical, depth the movie can come off as being plotless, and pointless. But if analyzed (which some are understandably opposed to) you can easily see the artistic depth that Malick has created. I will agree that if I had not seen "Badlands" and "The Thin Red Line" and if I did not know about how this project (originally written as Project Q) and how it was to be about the origins of life on Earth I can surely admit that I would have found this movie pointless. It is a character arch that follows one man's battle between his mother, that would represent grace and beauty; and the strictness and manly father. The "random" special effects sequences are to show the transformation of life from nothing to small single-celled organisms, to dinosaurs (and their alluded extinction) to man's struggle with where (s)he fits into this world. Just because things aren't as straightforward as many mainstream viewers would like them to be doesn't mean that this movie is pointless

You were too late to save me. We had to fast forward through the random universe shoots... that went on set to music for way to long. Waste of 2 hours I'll never get back!

Lauren - Like so many others on this list, I found the movie frustrating, long, meandering, pointless (although I did think there was a decent 60-minute movie in there bookended by some indulgent cosmic debris. I turned to my wife at the end of the move (which we did fast forward through in parts as many other did and said, We'll never get those two hours back!
As one prior reviewer sniffed, "You should do your research and know what Terrence Malick is all about. agreed. I will keep an eye out and avoid the inscrutable Mr. M from here on out.

critical thinkers all always in the minority, mediocrity is the duty of the masses....often when others are confronted with something that they cannot comprehend they resort to lashing out; a feeble attempt at asserting their control when they feel inadequate. the tree of life is a wonder-ful film

People with high intellectual values with great depth of personalities will always be minority and uneducated shallow fools like these will always be majority. I liked it and it wasn't the least painful for me to watch. Transformers 3 was way more painful.

Honestly, this film is like the Transformers 2 of artistic movies, it's way to long, stretches things way too far, and the characters are bland. What's even worse is that if you dislike it, you're called an idiot and get a lecture on what the film was trying to do.

This is an AMAZING nature show, btwn mins 20-36. The rest is boring posturing with one single plot point and countless images of people standing around looking sad. Ugh.

to all of you who allied yourself with this critic's take on the tree of life....keep your nose tightly adjoined to the ass in front of you and try not to think, it only makes things worse. dont worry, the little box you live in is safe and controlled, no chance of intelligent or creative thoughts to sneak their way in. heres a big mac, now settle down and do what big brother says.

I don't understand how anyone defends this film as intelligent. I like art in film but this film was ridiculously pointless. Only someone with a low IQ and a need to feel better then everyone would claim that this movie was somehow deep and then call people idiots for not understanding it when in reality there's nothing to get.
