If I can prevent just one person from watching this, it'll have been worth suffering through it.
I want my 139 minutes back.
Feb 21 - 11:17 AM
I am currently trying to watch the film as I type. I had to go onto the web just to see if if anyone had any idea what the point of this film was.
I love films of almost any genre but what the heck was with the random dinosaurs? I felt like I had got a Bali DVD by which they had recorded the wrong movie in the middle so that it included very loud and horrible opera singing and shots of random universe bits.
I am so glad to read that others fast forwarded as well. It is like the directer had wanted to make the film Baraka (which is a beautiful film) but forgot that it already exists.
Thank you for your honest comments, I will turn it off now and go and read a book.

What the hell is this movie about?

I agree. wasted 40 min of my life before changing the channel.. when the dinosaurs showed up, that did it for me!
Feb 27 - 04:25 AM
fully agree! it's a crap... pseudoartistic attempt to fool everybody ,lots of cliches, boring mix of National Geographic with some sketches from film school students ...i remember there was an artist in 60's who had an exhibition of canned shit...From then everything is an art, isn't it ?

Where oh where were you Kevin just 15 hours ago, you could have saved me from the one of the most boring loads of self-indulgent crap I've come across in years. Thankfully the 132 minutes in front of this movie wasn't completely wasted - there was about 20 minutes well spent when I dozed off.
It seems you are a film critic judging from the perspective of most viewers, rather than wanky critics who love an abstract arty crap on a plate.
Mar 10 - 03:58 PM
The only painful thing about this movie is the response. Some of the most ignorant things have come up in the comments not only here, but elsewhere.
"Movies have to have a engaging plot and must entertain"
Since when? Just because that's all you've ever been exposed to doesn't make it true. Sure, some films can do that, but that isn't the definition of a film. It is art, it takes on many different concepts and forms.
"The film is pretentious and self-indulgent"
Those two words are the scum of the Earth. You completely ignore the entire concept of art. He has a vision, he being Terrence Malick, the director. He has something he wants to explore. If a scientist tries to explore what created the big bang, he isn't called pretentious and headstrong. Terrence wants to explore something new, he wants to go farther than most people are even willing to go, and by the thread, are even willing to consider.
"Brad Pitt-Sean Penn blah blah not what I was expecting"
One of the things I hate most going into a film is when someone has high expectations. NEVER go into a film with expectations. That's being to bold. That's saying that every movie is going to be exactly what I want and if it isn't then it sucks. This film surprised me: I went into it with no expectations. I was completely baffled by what I saw. I thought 'this is so new to me, I've never once seen anything like it'. The following day when I woke, I had a sudden realization of how unique the film is in terms of editing and cinematography. Maybe it's been done before, but I hadn't seen it.
The point is, you are not the supreme commander of opinions. You hate the film? Fine, you hate the film, but it doesn't mean its bad. People who watch movies once a week casually or so suddenly feel they have the extreme power to decide whether this film was good or not when they themselves are lacking extremely in the field of film. As for those people who are well-versed in film and still didn't like it, the same, to a lesser degree. You hated the film? Fine, but because you were polarized from it doesn't make it a bad film. Life doesn't have a plot, we are all aware of that. Life is a stream of connected events and feelings and emotions. This film is replicating that. It is replicating life, memories, creation, death, fear, pain, joy, sorrow, childhood, regret and everything we experience in our world. It is told selectively, from the perspective of one family, really from one boy. If you can empathize with that boy, and I mean truly empathize and look from his perspective, then you shouldn't have any problem with this movie.
I'm sorry his film was too personal for you.

Yes movies are suppose to entertain and engage the viewer. Entertainment can come in many forms.Be it visually, mentally or emotionally. If this movie did this for you than kudos. To me this movie was akin to reading a taxlaw book.

One day, I hope, you will watch this movie again and understand it.
That day, you will feel so bad about having written this review it will haunt you.
That day, you will be mortified thinking that maybe your critic prevented someone from seeing this breathtaking masterpiece.
I may seem grandiloquent but that's because The Tree of Life is simply the most beautiful, toughtful movie I've ever seen in my life.
Mar 13 - 04:47 PM
Absolutely right, this critic is one of the critics that panned 2001: a space odyssey upon it's release. He, like those critics, will look like an idiot once this film starts to grow in stature and understanding. He won't change his opinion though, he represents the mainstream. He gave fast five and puss in boots 4/4 last year and green lantern 3/4. He is a moron

I have never regretted seeing a movie quite so strongly in my life!

What a bunch of crap this movie was. It's like the Emporor's New Clothes. Thank god someone was willing to speak up!
Mar 16 - 09:43 AM
Just watched this last night - I thought it was an amazing, beautiful film. I get why people didn't like it - there were a few elements that completely misfired - but the stuff they got right more than made up for it for me. The cinematography alone makes this film worth watching, IMHO.
Mar 28 - 07:52 AM
I love how I'm probably one of the youngest people who saw this film and I understood it more than most other people. Honestly this film was amazing
Apr 21 - 10:50 AM
If I wanted to waste 2 hrs of my life having someone give me their boring take on the depth of the universe and how we all fit in,I'd go to a catholic service. This movie is BORING. The first 40 min. I thought I was watching the Discovery channel. Yes it is visually stunning IF you really want to say you love this movie drop acid and watch the first hour. Then pause it wait to come of your trip. Then smoke a J and watch the rest, this should help greatly.

Many people go to the movies to escape their petty lives. Movies like this delve into the soul. Many are still too brainwashed and sleep walking through their lives, little realizing that something grander is within their grasp. Then, there are those who see the light and dance in it. They realize the cosmic dance is playing their tune and move and meld with the intricate melodies. I am saddened by the former and encouraged by the latter. Come to the light sleepy heads.

May 2 - 01:04 AM
The only thing more pretentious than this movie are all the people claiming that if you didn't "get it" are unable to grasp the intelligence of the film. There is nothing to get. The emperor isn't wearing any clothes. I fully understood it. Malick spends 2hrs and 18 minutes drilling it into you. The sequences about the beginning of life and the universe were beautiful. The actors did an excellent job (especially the children). It is merely too long with no story. What exactly was so deep about this movie? Anyone? What was so remarkable about it? What was said that hasn't already been said in a more interesting way? The dialog was awkward the scenes with the dinosaurs were far too long, distracting and oddly placed. I didn't like it. That doesn't make me stupid.
