Critics Consensus: The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 Is a Decent Send-Off

Plus, Lincoln and Silver Linings Playbook Are Certified Fresh

This week at the movies, we've got a vampire showdown (The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, starring Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson) and an embattled president (Steven Spielberg's Lincoln starring Daniel Day-Lewis). What do the critics have to say?

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2

48%

There's no middle ground on the Twilight series: either you're enraptured by the tale of Bella Swan and her supernatural paramours, or you're mystified by its appeal. For what it's worth, critics say The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 is easily the best entry in the franchise, with a rousing climax that goes a long way toward redeeming a sluggish first half. Bella (Kristen Stewart) is adjusting to her new life as both a mother and a vampire. But when malevolent Volturi go after their child, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Cullen round up a crew of sympathetic vampires and werewolves to stand with their family. The pundits say Breaking Dawn Part 2 is still melodramatic and poorly paced, but the performances are strong and the finale should satisfy Twihards. (Check out this week's Total Recall, in which we count down Stewart's best-reviewed movies, as well as our interviews with the stars of Breaking Dawn Part 2 and our Twilight watching series.)

Lincoln

89%

Abraham Lincoln's greatness as a president is never questioned these days, though his iconic image (the beard, the top hat, the gaunt frame) is so ubiquitous as a patriotic symbol that it can sometimes obscure his words and deeds. Critics say Steven Spielberg's Lincoln is a terrific corrective, thanks in large part to Daniel Day-Lewis' towering performance as the Great Emancipator. Lincoln follows the 16th president's political maneuverings during the dark days of the Civil War as he attempts to preserve the Union and abolish slavery. The critics say the Certified Fresh Lincoln is a marvelously acted, deftly observed drama that manages to make the inner workings of legislature endlessly fascinating.

Well, let's see. Should I see a film that is directed by one of the best directors of all time, about arguably our nation's finest president, staring Day-Lewis, who gave one of the best performances of all-time in one of my favorite films, Gangs of NY, or should I see the end of the melodramatic series of all-time?

Maybe, next time, Mr. Spielberg. LOL. Seriously, can't wait for Lincoln. Twilight can suck it.

i actually agree with chris. spielberg is associated with way too many people. yes he has made minority report and jurassic park and schindler's list, but he has also produced all three transformers movie and other stuff. chris nolan and david fincher are probably my favorite directors right now

Okay, all Steven did was executive produce them. Basically, he just gave the producers the money to make the movie. However, any director who has made Jaws, Close Encounters, Indiana Jones, E.T., The Color Purple, Empire of the Sun, Jurassic Park, Amistad, Saving Private Ryan, A.I., Minority Report, Catch Me If You Can, Munich,The Adventures of Tintin, and of course, Schindler's List is NOT overrated. Granted, I like Fincher, and I love Nolan, but Spielberg is one of the all-time greats and,IMO, one of the five best directors in the world, along with Nolan, Scorsese, Cameron, and Burton.

I think Shane got you and chris with the obvious strong list of 'Spielberg' directed films, that's just too strong a case for either one of you to argue with. Plus the guy forgot to mention "Duel" & "American Grafitti" which we're outstanding films as well.

"American Graffiti" was George Lucas. But, yeah, I don't trust anyone talking about Spielberg who doesn't mention "Jaws" or "Raiders".

ok so i get your point. yes steven spielberg has made a lot of good movies. minority report, jurassic park, and schindler's list are really good movies, but i think that christopher nolan has done some amazing movies. nolan has done inception, dark knight trilogy, and memento. i think that nolan has something that spielberg lacks, which is a lot of imagination.

Spielberg is one of the best directors of all time, only a moron would call him overrated. That or you simply did not watch his films, some of which (like Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's) are masterpieces. Nolan's made some good films but nothing near as profound as those two.

I agree with both you and Shane, I think Speilberg has made some of the best films ever, but he is also overrated. Don't get me wrong he has made some masterpieces and almost all of his films are great - even the lesser ones like Tintin are good. But I think most people when they see Speilberg's name think it has to be a masterpiece and refuse to criticise him even when he makes average or lacking films. I haven't seen Lincoln as I don't there's much chance of it seeing a release in Australia before the new year, but I was super excited for it until I saw the first trailer and it looked awful. I really hope I'm wrong and I really hope it is great, but from the trailer alone I feared this was another case of saying Speilberg can do no wrong. And rather than all the people calling others dumbasses for not liking a filmmaker, maybe you can realise that not everyone agrees with you, and that constructive criticism is a good thing for filmmakers, rather than just saying everything is great when it has a certain name alongside it. That is lazy, criticising isn't.

Is the new Twilight a musical? That poster is so confusing.

Lincoln for the win, but I'm definitely seeking out "Silver Lining Playbook". The trailers look like typical indie-angst, but that cast is irresistable, and David O. Russell has worked miracles before.

I'm a sucker for Tolstoy, and so I'll check out "Anna Karinina". The leads are strong (Knightly was very impressive in "Dangerous Method" last year. Plus it has a remarkable supporting cast with Kelly McDonald, Emily Watson and Olivia Williams. I'm interested in seeing "Barrymore" eventually.

A pair of eight year old girls who compete in Thailand's underground boxing circuit. My God. Wild Horses couldn't drag me away from the screen!

I'm most excited for Silver Lining Playbook as well. My wife is a Huge Joe Wright fan so wants to see Anna Karenina but also enjoys her twilight flicks. Buffalo Girls would be my choice but it's not playing anywhere near me. I can see a Twilight Musical as the next reboot.

Got a new WIfe! A new baby too!

I've only seen one David O. Russel film in The Fighter, but I really liked his directing style, and the trailer for Silver Linings looked great so I'll def see that first chance I get, and I like how Russell has mixed it up so much with his next film, also pretty glad he dropped the Uncharted film he was working on because that would've been terrible.

"Breaking Dawn 2 is decent". How many people were expecting that?
My sister's gonna end up buying it, I'm sure, so I might give it a shot (emphasis on might).

"Lincoln" might be interesting, but I can wait for the DVD.

At some point in the near future I'll be seeing "Skyfall". Saw "Wreck-It Ralph" a second time last night with my Dad and little sister, was still totally worth the $10 and 2 hours of my time. I'm interested in "Rise of the Guardians" next week too; let's see if DreamWorks can pull off another critical success (I was surprised by how much I enjoyed "Madagascar 3").

Lincoln is definately the movie to see. Anna Karinina's score is dissapointing, expecially after the combinations of Wright and Knightly have given us two terrific literary film adaptations in Atonement and Pride and Prejudice.

I'm kinda bummed the Twilight film didn't end up Fresh. 5 films of a unexplaned beloved series and even with the finale the critics couldn't bear to band together and throw a bone to the fans with a fresh rating. With Harry Potter in the 90s for its finale I thought maybe this would at least garner a 61% Oh well, I'm excited to see what project Condon will get to do Next.

It's kind of funny how in the same amount of time between the release of The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, Summit chruned out five twilight movies. I guess they were smart to do so, as Twilight isn't going to have that long lasting popularity that Harry Potter, Batman, or Star Wars have (the late night showings for Part 2 were almost the same as Part 1. Granted, late night showings haven't been doing well since The Dark Knight Rises shooting, but still I don't think this is going to showing the increase that Revenge of the Sith or Hallows Part 2 showed over their predecessors).

Anyway, I'm in no hurry to see it. Will probably check it out eventually once it hits the home market (I must admit I'm curious to see how they fixed up the climax of the book). Looking forward to Lincoln. Really glad to hear such an enthusiastic response for it. Although I've enjoyed Spielberg's past few films, it's been awhile since he's made something truly great, so hopefully that'll change with Lincoln. Also interested in Silver Lining's Playbook.

I'm surpised at the very middling reaction to Anna Karenina. I thought for sure this would be an oscar contender. Then again, it seems that with every new Joe Wright film, the enthusiastic response dwindles. If this continues, he'll be making his first rotten film pretty soon.

Yeah if "Twilight" has a jump over the previous film like the final "Star Wars" & "Harry Potter" films did which was around 26 percent, "Twilight" would gross around 188 million this weekend, which is definantly not going to happen. I think it reaches between 140-150 million this weekend, which is a lot of money to make on an opening weekend, for any movie.

Well, from early estimates it actually made less on friday than Part 1 did. Granted 71.2 mil opening day is nothing to sneer at but still you'd expect Part 2 to show some jump from Part 1.

Well, I was quite impressed with the documentary Hitler's Children. The 60% freshness doesn't do it justice. I thought it was quite powerful. Other than that I'm quite excited for Lincoln (Spielberg being at the top of his game), Silver Linings Playbook (I hear Jennifer Lawrence is stealing every scene she is in) and Anna Karenina, but that's just because I'm a big sucker for Tolstoy.

I don't know why so many people have to downgrade Twilight. It is what it is, if you say you don't care about this so-called "crap" (putting it lightly), then why do you comment on it and complain. You'd think someone who didn't care for something would put less emotion or effort into stating one's opinion...
