Mean, manipulative, conniving, and utterly out of control, these skinny, sexy, drug-addicted, 13-year-old time bombs are nothing short of terrifying. Hardwicke's movie is brilliant in its ability to portray this phenomenon, which comes off as very real. The skillful photography from cinematographer Elliot Davis communicates the most complicated themes of the film: insecurity, confusion, wanting to be liked and accepted, and feeling like it's time to grow up fast. In an early scene, protagonist Tracy (Evan Rachel Wood), a shy girl and good student, approaches Evie (Nikki Reed), the school's ultra-popular bad girl, and the two size up each other's clothing, jewelry, hair, shoes, socks, and decide to go on a shopping spree. From there Tracy spirals downward, copying Evie's every move in an aggressive game of daring each other to take increasingly dangerous risks--stealing, getting piercings, experimenting with sex, drinking and taking drugs, and much more. All the while Tracy's mom (Holly Hunter) who is a bohemian ex-alcoholic trying to be open-minded and supportive about her daughter's rebellion, slowly loses her authority and her ability to cope with these volatile teens. A booming, excellent soundtrack punctuates the hyper, desperate, manic mood of the girls' behavior, and catalyzes the adrenaline rush that is THIRTEEN. [More]

Reviews for Thirteen
...a cautionary tale, and as such it is unlikely to be heeded by teens anywhere and unlikely to be seen by the very parents who might learn the most from it.
Quite simply, Evan Rachel Wood is fantastic as a youth gone wild. Stellar performances will make you overlook Thirteen's movie-of-the-week-ness.
As the girls descend into realms of the irreparable, you twist and turn in your seats, in terror for them and also in empathy for Wood's character.
'Es un claro ejemplo de que es posible hacer películas sobre adolescentes sin burlarse de ellos o del público. Esta es una película inteligente, con neuronas y muchas agallas'
The script was based on first-hand experience, and a lot of it rings chillingly true.
Catherine Hardwicke’s work is a dizzying wallop of a teen movie. . . . Thirteen is a handheld, bleached-out, rollercoaster reel of celluloid.
Hardwicke shows great instincts, using a frenetic documentary style to hammer home the brutal realities of modern teenage life, but rooting it in an unusually sensitive portrait of mother and daughter.
Wood's performance is revelatory, and she's matched by the always-terrific Hunter.
Is Thirteen a movie about hysteric teen-age girls, or a movie about a teen-age culture of hysteria, or is it a movie in hysterics about teen-age culture?
It's a two-hour gut-wrench that just keeps tightening, and ends in a place that doesn't make you feel much better, like watching an after-school special gone horribly wrong.
Evan Rachel Wood, Nikki Reed and Holly Hunter give hard-edged, brilliant performances in this gritty coming-of-age drama. A must see!
If you have teenagers, you will rush home from Thirteen and want to hug them tightly and never let them go.
One of the qualities that sets 'Thirteen' apart from the hundreds of other 'teen tragedy' stories that have been presented over the decades is its unwillingness to fall back on convenient labels and the usual soap operatics.
Breaks any and all preconceptions of what teenage life is supposed to be and projects the worst-case scenario.
