Paul Verhoeven Directing Thomas Crown Affair Sequel?
Brosnan's apparently still committed to the sequel.
by Jeff Giles | November 12, 2007
Discuss Article
Two years after first being announced, the sequel to 1999's Pierce Brosnan-led remake of The Thomas Crown Affair is still in development -- but if you've been impatient to see Brosnan return to his suave, precious goods-stealin' roots, ComingSoon has good news for you.

According to a report published over the weekend at ComingSoon (via FilmTotaal), the Thomas Crown sequel -- titled The Topkapi Affair -- has a director, and his name is Paul Verhoeven. The Basic Instinct director apparently shared the news with Met Het Oog Op Morgen, a Dutch radio program.

As we've been discussing here since September 2005, The Topkapi Affair will be an adaptation of Eric Ambler's novel Light of Day, which previously journeyed to the big screen under the guise of 1964's Topkapi. In other words, the Thomas Crown remake is being given a sequel that is also a remake...of another, unrelated film.

This has to be some kind of cinematic first, right? Please let it be a first.

Oh yeah! I've been waiting to see Verhoeven's next outing and hoped that it would be something a bit more "challenging" but at least now we can expect a lot of sex in this new film.

Back in the days of original ideas when the original Thomas Crowne Affair was released, no one would even have come up with the idea that a sequel to it was necessary. But that was then and this is now when Hollywood seems to define the word original as a remake, a sequel, a prequel or a copy cat director such as Michael E-Bay.

If you haven't seen it yet, check out "Black Book," Verhoeven's WWII movie that came out earlier this year. It's easily the best thing he's done since "Starship Troopers."

So is Renee Russo in this sequel? If not, can I lobby for Charlize Theron? I'll admit it, I just want to see her naked again.

"Best" and "Starship Troopers" in one sentence?! OMG... The galaxy must be exploding right now.

"Black Book" (of gewoon "Zwartboek" in het Nederlands) is a great movie, and I usually hate Dutch movies. Best work since "Robocop". (Yes, better than "Basic Instinct".)

Agreed. Black Book was a great movie. And for the record, I enjoyed both Robocop and Starship Troopers.

I said "It's easily the best thing he's done SINCE 'Starship Troopers.'" Considering the only movie he made between "Starship Troopers" and "Black Book" was "Hollow Man," I was technically correct.

"Starship Troopers" is still a brilliant movie, however.

If paul is going to do a sequel the first thing they need is younger leads because the original actors are kind of old. The first actress I would choose is megan fox. After transformers, I would love to see what is under her hood.

You are so off base on this. Megan Fox is uber-hot, but The Thomas Crown Affair is very much for adults. Megan Fox would make this movie look like it was the CW network.

i just don't know, i love verhoeven and his movies have lots of T & A but i wouldn't consider any of them "sexy", like when berkley is full frontal and having a having a grand mal on agent cooper's johnson, that's not sexy. i suppose you could make a case for basic instinct, but i can't get turned on when i see "lil michael" in all his glory. the orginal TCA and to a certain extent the remake was cool sexy, not unprotected one night stand with 2am pick up sexy.

Your comment is extremely funny as you are talking about a remake; the Brosnan movie is a remake of a Steve McQueen film from the 60's.

I don't care who they choose to play the female lead as long as it isn't Rene Russo and her oddly shaped areolas. I would prefer to see Uma Thurman.

It will all be worth it if Brosnan walks on water, a la Robocop.

What's wrong with you people? Megan, Charlize, Scarlette?
Why can't Renee Russo come back? She must come back.
