RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: Thor and Star Wars: The Complete Saga

Well, this turned out to be a pretty incredible week on home video, and that's due in large part to two very big reissues and a couple of rock solid new releases. First up, the first Marvel movie of the year that also sort of kicked off the Summer Movie Season is finally available to take home, and it's accompanied by a concert documentary of a popular late night talk show host and a Best Foreign Film Oscar contender, both Certified Fresh. We've also got a couple of smaller films that didn't do as well and a new Criterion Blu-ray of an indie classic. But the two releases you should be most geeked about are the new Blu-rays for a little movie called Citizen Kane and a modest sci-fi saga known as Star Wars. I hope you kids saved up your allowance. Weekly Ketchup: Thor 2 Gets A Director

After a slow post-Comic Con week, this week's Ketchup sees Hollywood getting back into full swing, with news for big superhero movies like Thor 2 and Man of Steel, and a laundry list of casting announcements for stars like Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert DeNiro, Chuck Norris (yes, really), Brendan Fraser and Reese Witherspoon. Also included in the mix are The Expendables 2, a remake of Short Circuit, and at least three CGI animated family films. This week also has the rare distinction of having six "Rotten Idea" stories out of ten, giving Rotten-ness in Hollywood an unwanted plurality. More…

Five Favorite Films with Stuntman Vic Armstrong

His name may not be instantly familiar, but his work most certainly is: over a prolific career, Vic Armstrong has been a stunt man, stunt coordinator and second unit director on some of the biggest and best-loved action movies of the past four decades. He's stunt-doubled for successive James Bonds from Sean Connery to Pierce Brosnan, worn the cape and tights on Richard Donner's Superman, and famously done stunt work for Harrison Ford on, among many of the actor's other roles, the original three Indiana Jones films. Then there's his work with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Tom Cruise, Sylvester Stallone and Angelina Jolie, to name a handful. With the release of his book, The True Adventures of the World's Greatest Stuntman, we spoke to Armstrong about his career, filming action on Marvel's Thor and the upcoming Amazing Spider-Man, and his Five Favorite Films. Box Office Wrapup: Thor Finishes On Top Of Bridesmaids

The super hero adventure Thor held firmly to the number one spot in its second weekend with a solid hold while the raunchy comedy Bridesmaids scored an impressive debut in second place. April's Brazil-set blockbusters Fast Five and Rio both remained in the top five thanks to good legs while the new 3D thriller Priest debuted in fourth with moderate results. Overall ticket sales were only slightly off from last year's red hot frame. More…

Marvel Movie Madness! Day 1: Thor

Jeff: Okay, so it isn't a perfect movie. In fact, it's kind of messy. But here's what I really dug about Thor: I loved the feeling of watching something that was at least trying to be a piece of epic escapist entertainment -- and succeeding more than it really had any right to. It's funny, it has plenty of action, it's impeccably cast, and it even boasts a touch of the old Branagh gravitas. For all its flaws, it looks like a movie, and that's something you can't say as often as you used to. More…

Box Office Guru Wrapup: Thor Hammers The Competition

This weekend, the latest super hero from the Marvel vault made his debut on the silver screen as Thor soared to a number one opening in North America. The sequel Fast Five fell sharply but finished in second with a hefty take of its own as both films continued to fight it out across the global box office. Rival wedding comedies battled it out for third place with the black-led Jumping the Broom edging out the white-led Something Borrowed despite playing in 900 fewer theaters. But the overall marketplace could not match up to last year's frame which saw a gargantuan bow from a bigger comic book avenger -- Iron Man 2.

Doubling its nearest competitor, the effects-driven super hero flick Thor bowed on top with an estimated $66M from 3,955 locations for a muscular $16,688 average. More…

Critics Consensus: Thor is Certified Fresh

This week at the movies, we've got a mighty Norse god (Thor, starring Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman), a love triangle (Something Borrowed, starring Kate Hudson and Ginnifer Goodwin), and wedding bell blues (Jumping the Broom, starring Angela Bassett and Loretta Devine). What do the critics have to say? Blockbuster time! Now that summer's here, all we need is a good superhero movie to kick things off in grand style. And critics say we've got one with Thor, a robust, thrilling adventure with smarts and sly laughs. Chris Hemsworth stars as the God of Thunder, who's been exiled from Asgard after heedlessly starting a war. More…

Total Recall: Mighty Viking Movies

From the pantheon of ancient deities to the pages of Marvel Comics and finally to the silver screen, Thor has had quite the journey -- and judging from its robust Tomatometer, the hammer-wielding Asgardian is none the worse for wear. Arriving this weekend at theater near you (and on suitably massive IMAX 3D screens), Kenneth Branagh's action epic blends timeless mythology with cutting-edge special effects and a marquee-ready cast -- and in the process, it continues Hollywood's long love affair with all things Viking-related. Naturally, we decided to get in the spirit of things by smoking some cod, pouring a big cup of mead, and looking back at some of the more noteworthy examples of the genre. Hop into our longship, won't you? More…

Weekly Ketchup: Kirk's Father to Play Thor

This week's Ketchup has is very biopic heavy (six out of eleven stories), four of which are coincidentally themed around important events in the history of African Americans. There's also new movies for George Clooney and Ralph Fiennes, and the big Thor news we've been waiting weeks for. #1 THE NORSE GODS OF THUNDER AND MISCHIEF, THOR AND LOKI, HAVE FOUND THEIR MORTAL FORMS One of the most memorable scenes, and performances, in the new Star Trek is the opening sequence, in which George Kirk (James T.'s dad) is forced to take the helm of his ship after his captain's death, and make a very difficult command decision. Playing George Kirk was a young unknown actor named Chris Hemsworth, but in his brief role, he came across, in my opinion, as someone that it felt like I had seen in movies before, and frankly, wanted to see do more stuff in the future. This week's Ketchup includes continuing casting for Marvel's Thor, a MacGyver movie, Tom Cruise talking about Mission: Impossible IV, and new roles for Brad Pitt, Natalie Portman, Chow Yun-Fat, Kevin Costner and Tommy Lee Jones. There was a good bit of news this about Thor, starting with the rumor that Natalie Portman is the top choice for the female. What isn't said specifically is who that female lead, but really, there's only two major female characters in the Thor story: the Asgardian sword maiden Sif (who is hard to imagine being played by the 5' 3" Portman) and the mortal nurse, Jane Foster.
