Miles is distinguished for his musical brilliance yet also set apart by a neurological disorder. He must cope with the teasing and bullying of his classmates, but more importantly with the alienation of his father, a studio musician uncomfortable with his affliction. Sensitive to Miles' need for a father, Laura arranges for Miles to meet his idol, the legendary saxophonist Tyrone Pike. A breathless improvisational meeting between the two forges a friendship. Miles' desire for his mother to share in his new found love for Tyrone leads him into a child's innocent game of matchmaking. Set to the exciting and sensual rhythms of the New York jazz scene, The Tic Code is a riveting, touching and exhilarating story of three people finding themselves by finding each other. -- © 2000 Lions Gate Films [More]

It's got more genuine-seeming feelings and a more accurate take on its particular corner of the world than a colosseum of summer blockbusters.

The Tic Code works better as a sociological study than as a gripping drama. And during this summer of our discontent, that may be recommendation enough.

Starts out self-consciously but gets better as it goes along, winding up as affecting as it is illuminating.

While far from terrible, The Tic Code ultimately lacks the sophistication that separates a feature-length film from a TV movie-of-the-week.

The Tic Code is badly lit and at times, awkwardly inspirational, yet there's real feeling in it.

Ms. Draper's taut, self-effacing, extremely quiet performance is the best thing about the movie.

This is the loving accomplishment of The Tic Code, to open a door onto the deepest kind of understanding.

The Tic Code is as cute as Tyrone and Miles' spasms, as rote as the melismatic instrumentals that turn up in the movie's nightclubs.
