Menachem (Aki Avni) is a deeply religious young man and a superb soldier. Thanks in part to the influence of Rabbi Meltzer (Assi Dayan), Menachem gets the chance to create his own elite Orthodox unit for the Israeli army. Menachem also has a quiet crush on the rabbi's daughter, Michal (Tinkerbell). He and Michal are both distraught when the rabbi tries to arrange Michal's marriage to his best Yeshiva student, Pini (Edan Alterman), who is also Menachem's friend. Michal is a fiercely independent young woman, who resents her father's devotion to "Greater Israel" at the expense of his family. The situation gets far more complicated when Menachem is implicated in a fanatical plot to blow up the Dome of the Rock, the mosque on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. Cedar has created a moving romantic drama with elements of a tense political thriller, all captured against the beautiful backdrop of the Judean hills. Avni and Tinkerbell deliver nuanced and graceful performances. The film subtly extols the virtues of devout faith, while condemning religious and political fanaticism. [More]

Reviews for Time of Favor
This fascinating look at Israel in ferment feels as immediate as the latest news footage from Gaza and, because of its heightened, well-shaped dramas, twice as powerful.
Just as the recent Argentine film Son of the Bride reminded us that a feel-good movie can still show real heart, Time of Favor presents us with an action movie that actually has a brain.
A headline-fresh thriller set among orthodox Jews on the West Bank, Joseph Cedar's Time Of Favor manages not only to find a compelling dramatic means of addressing a complex situation, it does so without compromising that complexity.
I enjoyed Time of Favor while I was watching it, but I was surprised at how quickly it faded from my memory.
Cedar takes a very open-minded approach to this sensitive material, showing impressive control, both visually and in the writing.
One of the most successful, provocative and intensely contemporary of Israeli films, so much so that to watch it is to feel the country having a passionate argument with itself.
An unflinching, complex portrait of a modern Israel that is rarely seen on-screen.
What distinguishes Time of Favor from countless other thrillers is its underlying concern with the consequences of words and with the complicated emotions fueling terrorist acts.
Time of Favor could have given audiences the time of day by concentrating on the elements of a revealing alienation among a culture of people who sadly are at hostile odds with one another through recklessness and retaliation.
Moderately involving despite bargain-basement photography and hackneyed romance.
