Julie Walters stars as Bernie McPhelimy, a mother of four who moves to Andersonstown, West Belfast in 1972. As soon as they arrive, the war between the IRA and the British government lands in their front yard. When a freak bullet kills one of Bernie's closest friends, she begins speaking out against both the British Army, as well as the IRA, sparking controversy amongst the local citizens. Before she knows it, she's become a media sensation, and is meeting with high-ranking British officials to recommend a ceasefire. All is not well at home, however.
