Weekly Ketchup: T.J. Hooker Film in Development
by Greg Dean Schmitz | July 10, 2009
Blog Article | Discuss Article
Summary

The film development news leading up to the 4th of July was relatively slow, but this week's Ketchup is overflowing hot news items, including several superhero movies, two TV show adaptations, the requisite relaunch of a 1980s movie, a SNL skit-turned-movie and new projects for Will Smith, George Clooney, Mel Gibson and Jason Statham. #1 T.J. HOOKER TO RIDE A WINDSHIELD RIGHT INTO YOUR LOCAL MOVIE THEATER Although Hollywood is still mostly infatuated with remakes, the industry hasn't forgotten old TV shows, with the latest wave coming mostly from the 1980s (The A-Team, MacGyver, Magnum P.I.), following the previous batch of TV show adaptations that was mostly from the 1970s (Charlie's Angels, Starsky & Hutch, The Dukes of Hazzard). The latest 1980s TV show to get put into development as a movie is the 1982-1986 ABC (and then CBS) cop drama, T.J. Hooker. Back to Article

Didn't you mean to put the TJ Hooker and Mac Gruber films under the Rotten Ideas category.

You know what show I'd like to see made into a movie? Have Gun Will Travel. Great show, great premise, great theme song...Have gun will travel reads the card of a maaannn...A knight without armor in a savage landddddd...Sorry probably showing my age here, but I watched a marathon of it on TV Land and I expected it to be not as great as I remembered, but that show was way ahead of it's time. Much rather see that than TJ Hooker.

Sweet! Some original ideas this week!

Nice to see Zach Galifianakis and (maybe) Bradley Cooper getting their due. Hopefully, we'll see some news about a project for Ed Helms soon.

The pairing of Will Smith and Andrew Niccol alone has put City That Sailed on my must-see list.

Still think Steve Carell was a better choice for The Beaver.

No doubt about it, MacGruber will be a disaster.

Sorry if the preceding comments make me sound like Victoria Alexander, but I felt it necessary to cover all my thoughts in one comment box as opposed to several.

A last minute update that just got announced after everyone at Rotten Tomatoes went home for the week... Ryan Reynolds has indeed landed the role of Hal Jordan in the Green Lantern movie !

http://weblogs.variety.com/bfdealmemo/2009/07/ryan-reynolds-is-the-green-lantern.html?nid=2854

Of the three actors they were considering, I wasn't as excited about Reynolds, because I think he is far better suited to play (the real) Deadpool, but if he's still game to playing two comic book heroes (well I guess three if you count Hannibal King in Blade 3), then I guess it's okay. I just hope this doesn't kill the prospect of him eventually doing Deadpool too.

Sadly, "Spork, the Motion Picture" is genuinely a better concept for a film than many, if not most, of the licensed products currently in various stages of adaptation.

I mean really, how did Spork's parents hook up? How did they overcome their differences? Were they both recyclable? How does Spork get along with Knife? I mean the plot possibilities are endless. I smell franchise. We're talking about AT LEAST a 65 million $ opening weekend.

The Will Smith project, City That Sailed, sounds incredible. That is definately something i want to see and definately an ORIGINAL idea. So there are a few left.

Cool about Ryan Reynolds. I can visualize it.

I love Ryan Reynolds but, I mean, come on. Not Deadpool AND the Green Lantern. He should just do Deadpool. I think Bradley Cooper would be good as the Green Lantern.

A viewmaster movie? Gotta agree; that has to be the most rotten idea for a movie in like...well, ever. The producers give it some credit I guess, but I've never heard of the writer. I don't care much for Fringe though. Talk about milking the product tie-ins. This is absolutely shameless, a new low even for Hollywood.

Nothing will be left from the 80's, I guess the 90's will be next - Quantum Leap, Lexx, SeaQuest DSV, Walker Texas Ranger and on a very special movie of Blossom, ha.

Feel bad for Val Kilmer guess he needs a paycheck, to bad its for MacGruber...

Stupid View-master movie, guess it will be like watching your grandparents many pics they have on Slides, but with great information added at the bottom!

Thanks to Joel and the bots on MST3K for this line
"Hooker's a good cop!!"

Well, at least the City That Sailed sounds interesting, and Blitz and The Beaver could be good. I really couldn't care less about the rest, though. However, I do stand by my statement that a Baywatch spoof movie with old cast returns a couple new characters could be really funny.

The City that Sailed sounds like it has the potential to be an original film, but some of that hope was lost when I saw that it was being developed for 20th Century Fox. Fox is the place where original ideas die.

As for the View-master movie, I agree it seems to be a really stupid idea, but there is potential for making an entertaining family adventure film out of it. There are actually a lot of possibility: it could be a mystery (with the pictures in the view-master displaying clues), a treasure hunt (with the View-master serving as the map), or a fantasy (with the view-master a portal to a magical world). (It could also be horror, featuring grisly images that predict events or shows past events, or a suspense story with a disturbing serial killer who uses a kid's toy to play games with a detective, but those don't fit the family friendly plan.) It could be a magic toy or one with slides inserted by a mysterious stranger. It doesn't have to be about the View-master; it could simply use the toy as the center to a family story (this is why I think comparison's are made to The Goonies).

I'm not defending Hollywood and their inane plans to make movies based off toys (but those who went to see Transformers are partly to blame); I just think there could be a good story here and it is not as "rotten" as most of you think. Of course, I doubt anyone in Hollywood would have enough imagination to make this film work.

I don't know which movie sounds worse. TJ Hooker,I really can't remember to much about TJ Hooker. Baywatch, witch was garbage to begin with, with David *******, Er, I mean Hasselhoff. I think that the only memorable thing about Baywatch was Pamela Anderson running in slow motion on the beach.

As a little boy, I owned a View-Master. Making a film would be even worse than making a film based on Chutes and Ladders.
