The Weinstein Co. has purchased rights to distribute Boy A, an adaptation of the award-winning novel by Brit writer Jonathan Trigell, directed by John Crowley.

Boy A follows a child murderer upon his release from prison at 24 years of age. As he prepares to reintegrate into society, the reformed killer -- renamed Jack, in an effort to make a new beginning -- must deal with a tabloid frenzy and his dark childhood to put his past to rest.

Crowley's film, which has its first public screening tonight, has largely impressed critics who saw it Friday. The purchase has made Boy A one of the bigger buzz films of the weekend. One reviewer (over at the Sideshow-Showcase blog) who saw it yesterday calls it the best movie of the year:

"Boy A, as a film, completely kicked my ass. I got weepy. I felt exhausted after. It was amazing."

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the deal was sealed Friday. The cast is led by Andrew Garfield (soon to be seen in Lions for Lambs and The Other Boleyn Girl) as Jack, and Peter Mullan (Braveheart, Trainspotting, Children of Men) as Jack's caseworker. There are no details yet on a release date, but the film is set for television broadcast in the U.K.

I read the book, which was excellent, and would certainly go to see the movie. A topic that needs exploring.
