Critics Consensus: Tower Heist is Solid Escapism

Plus, Harold and Kumar are still smokin.'

This week at the movies, we've got a crime caper (Tower Heist, starring Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy) and yuletide merriment (A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas, starring John Cho and Kal Penn). What do the critics have to say?

Tower Heist

69%

If you're in the market for a solid, escapist escapade, critics say Tower Heist should do the trick -- just don't expect much more from this all-star action comedy. Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy lead a team of working stiffs who, after being taken in a Ponzi scheme, decide to hit back by robbing the swindler's opulent high rise. The pundits say that Tower Heist, despite its topicality, is little more than a fun caper movie with some solid set pieces -- in other words, nothing too profound, but better than average. (Check out this week's Total Recall, in which we count down co-star Matthew Broderick's best-reviewed films.)

A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas

69%

Christmas may more than a month away, but your old buddies Harold and Kumar are ready to spread some holiday cheer -- and critics say A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas is delightfully outrageous and occasionally heartfelt. This time out, our heroes embark on a mission to find the perfect Christmas tree after they mistakenly incinerate Harold's father-in-law's prized evergreen; once again, they become mired in all kinds of wackiness, some of which involves Neil Patrick Harris. The pundits say A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas may not measure up the first installment, but its high spirits and inspired (and often tasteless) gags (in 3D!) make for a playful, fun ride.

I wasn't expecting gold from Tower Heist but as long as it's a comedy that delivers, I'm happy.
And glad to see Eddie Murphy back doing non idiotic costumed up comedies.
I still think neither Tower nor Kumar will win the weekend. Most likely Puss in Boots does equal or a little better than last weekend due to word of mouth.

Given Puss' relatively light opening, I'm going with Tower Heist. I think it'll be close, but Heist will steal the weekend (see what I did there?)

The titles write themselves if Tower does pull a fast one on Puss. "Eddie Murphy and Co. rob some puss off its money"

Since I like heist films, I'd probably want to see Tower Heist but not in theatres since it's labelled as a comedy and I'm often uncomfortable seeing comedies on the big screen!

The only thing I'm looking forward to this month is The Muppets. I might see Breaking Dawn if someone pays for me. Nice to see Eddie Murphy score a fresh rating for the first time in a while. I hope he can go back to his old roots.

I'll be seeing Tower Heist for the school paper. Part of me wishes I could see Harold and Kumar though. I like the series and this one looks pretty promising for fans.

Think of it this way: If you don't like Tower Heist, then you owe it to yourself to see Harold and Kumar for your personal entertainment.

I had assumed that you wrote for a high school paper when you said you couldn't review R-rated films, but then last week you mentioned it was a college paper. Why can't you review an R-rated film for a college paper??

Nov 4 - 05:46 AM

Jacob Holmes

Christian college. but I'm calling shenanigans on that policy because somebody reviewed Midnight in Paris and I know for a fact that it's rated R. Must have slipped past the editors somehow. I don't think I could get away with Harold and Kumar though.

Gotcha. Anyhow, sorry to ruin your case, but Midnight in Paris is PG-13.

really? i could have sworn I saw an R rating on that movie. and I'm not sure about Passion. maybe they did but I wasn't here when they would have reviewed it

To those wondering about Tower Heist, I saw it last week and thought it was pretty enjoyable. Some of the heist stuff does good a little ridiculous but the main thing is that it is funny and is sure to give you a good bit of laughs. I'd give it a 6/10, nothing to remarkable but it's definitely worth the watch.

Interested in Tower Heist. I wasn't expecting it to be great or anything, just enjoyable if forgettable fun, and that's what the reviews seem to say. As long as it's along the lines of the first two Rush Hour movies, I'll be satisfied.

Why do I suspect Tower Heist sucks and is being overrated. I actually expected H&K to stink royally but it did better than I had thought it would.

I think it's more like the movie isn't as bad as the critics thought it would be - hence the higher score. I had the same feeling for Vin Diesel's XXX. When I went to see it expecting crappy but action-packed, I thought "You know, it's actually pretty good" since the bar was set so low. Then I saw it again with a friend and thought "Nope. It's pretty bad."

Had the same feeling about XXX. When I first saw it, I thought it was sort of unique because the hero was not clean cut, but tatted up and he was battling punk rock terrorists. I thought it was alright, and I even enjoyed it when I saw it in the theater. Watched it again on DVD..... I cringed at 90% of the dialogue.

W-ww-hat? A Brett Ratner movie that's g-g-oo-d?! Color me surprised. I'll catch it Harold and Kumar soon, but I think I'll blast through Uncharted 3 again first.

I was surprised to see Tower Heist score that high, it looked kind of generic and bland to me. I'll probably rent it.

Also surprised about Harold and Kumar 3, since critics often hate movies of that ilk.

As for The Son of No One..... stop giving Channing Tatum lead roles!

Tatum was hanging out at one of my local bars in Ybor City FL filming his stripper movie. All the girls and numerous gay guys were swooning over him making it impossible to get up to the bar. I just wanted a damn drink! Had to go elsewhere; was not interested in hangin' with Tatum.

Clicked on "Son of No One" to read funny reviews, and was shocked that they could get Al Pacino, Ray Liotta, Juliette Binoche, Katie Holmes and Tracy Morgan to co-star in a cheesy Tatum flick. Not that any of them have been in anything of note lately, but still... wow.

Very surprised at the meter for Tower Heist. From the commercials it looked absolutely awful. I'm glad that Eddie Murphy is in fine form again but I doubt I'll ever actually see the movie.

This weekend is devoted to Harold and Kumar 3D! Those movies make me laugh so god damn hard my side literally hurts. This one is going to be amazing and I'm in need of some good laughs
