Average Rating:3.5/10

Consensus: Afflicted with extensive re-editing and re-writing, this sex comedy feels confusingly choppy. Also, the main characters are so wealthy and privileged that it's difficult to feel sympathy for their problems.

Rated: R [See Full Rating] sexuality and language

Ellie (Diane Keaton) is a successful designer, Porter (Warren Beatty) a high-powered architect, living in the lap of luxury on Fifth Avenue with their wonderful children and various foreigners wandering through their home. Off they jet to Paris to celebrate their 25th anniversary with their best friends, Griffin (Garry Shandling) and Mona (Goldie Hawn). But upon their return to New York, the idyllic life disappears when Mona catches Griffin having an affair, setting off a trail of suspicion and betrayal among the foursome. While Porter tries to downplay his fling with a cellist named Alex (Nastassja Kinski), he gets himself stuck in hilarious entanglements with Jenna Elfman and Andie MacDowell--and a much more serious one with his oldest and dearest friend, Mona. Peter Chelsom's romantic comedy, cowritten by and featuring the great Buck Henry, is a lighthearted romp through New York City, Sun Valley, Mississippi, Paris, and the Hamptons. The terrific cast also includes Charlton Heston and Marian Seldes as MacDowell's dangerously bizarre parents, but it is Shandling and Beatty who steal the show. Shandling provides constant comic relief as he struggles with his newfound sexuality while Beatty hems and haws his way through a series of increasingly ridiculous situations, able to do with a glance and a grin what most actors can't do in a lifetime. It's all rather unfunny and depressingly predictable.

A well-acted, sophisticated farce of a type that never gets made anymore.

So many idiotic complications, implausible reversals, loose ends and flat-out buffoonery that the good will of the opening is utterly lost.

Every scene is designed to cram in a motley combination of stars and send them flailing about screaming in lieu of any plot or character development.

Without warning, it goes from inept to complete disaster, sinking from indifferent to fiasco in the blink of an eye.

You really can't believe how bad this movie is until you lay your eyes on it.

The gags don't play, the writing is off-key, and director Peter Chelsom never establishes a rhythm to carry the comedy along.

One of the best casts for a sex farce in many a year and to see this much talent wasted is infuriating.

When Charlton Heston is the funniest thing in a comedy, you've got problems.

Coarse, clunky, jerry rigged, and -- worst of all -- not funny.

Characters and subplots fly in and out of the mix for no discernable reason as the story stumbles from one improbable situation to the next.

This comedy's problem isn't that it's witless but rather that it's aimless.
