Picture Gallery of the Week: The Boondock Saints II: All Saint's Day

The only thing more amazing that this movie got made is that it got made so quickly and quietly. Considering writer/director Troy Duffy's well-publicized volatile nature, I would've pegged this production as fraught with controversy, scrutiny, and meltdowns. But, it's complete, and it's in theaters at the end of this month. Browse the gallery.

Hmmm let's see what happens

Playboy Slim

Playboy Slim on 10-9-2009 04:31 PM

One day, Jamie Foxx woke up and said "I give up." The result is every movie after "Ray".

(And bear in mind "Collateral" came before "Ray".)

And boo to "Saw VI", BOO! At least your better than the video game.

Solonik -. on 10-9-2009 07:32 PM

You didn't like him in The Soloist or Jarhead? He's still got a couple of good films coming out soon I think.

Playboy Slim

Playboy Slim on 10-9-2009 08:14 PM

I haven't seen "The Soloist", but "Jarhead" was kinda lame.

King Thor

King Thor on 10-10-2009 11:48 AM

The Soloist was pretty good IMO and Foxx and Downey were both good in it.

**** the Saw series. There's a reason why I haven't seen them since Saw 1.

Say what you will about Boondock Saints, I love it. I know you're all confused, thinking "What? He seemed like he had a couple of working brain cells, why does he like that trash?" That's exactly why I like it: It's trash. It's my getaway movie for when I've watched too many bad movies, and soon I'll have two!

Also, who came up with the name "Law Abiding Citizen"? That's the most boring name for a movie I've ever heard. They might as well have called it "Nice Guy Eats Cereal" or something like that.

I just saw an advertisement for the Saw video game today. Finally, something more boring than watching the Saw sequels: watching someone else play the Saw video game! Isn't technology grand . . .

Playboy Slim

Playboy Slim on 10-9-2009 06:52 PM

Nice Guy Eats Cereal would've been a better title.

Matanuki

Matanuki on 10-10-2009 12:25 PM

At least we agree on one thing today -lol-, that is a lame title. However, every time I come across a lame title I can't help but think of Walter Mosley. Nearly ALL of his titles are lame, with a penchant for colors (Black Betty, Little Yellow Dog, White Butterfly, etc..) but the stories are always poignant and compelling. It brings us to the age old adage; never judge a book (or movie, in this case) by it's cover.

Daybreakers looks good. . .

Boondock Saints 2? After seeing that documentary of the wanker Director, never thought they'd let him work again. . . but, I guess the money generated from the cult original worked. . .

My only hope is, another cat goes Splat.

Bigbrother

Bigbrother on 10-9-2009 07:02 PM

Tom, think you have to consider the source on that documentary. I have no doubt parts of it are true, but come on. If you want to find out the truth about Jesus you don't ask Satan or Peter because you're going to get a very biased opinion. I don't believe it anymore than I'd believe a documentary on President Obama produced by Bill O'Reilly.

tomwaitsjrHAPPYICONOCLAST on 10-10-2009 07:14 AM

hey big brother,

you have a point. But, from what I remember, some of the scenes were Duffy acting somewhat delusional and vain.

BUT, editing and directing can transform most anyone to idiot status.

1. Jamie Foxx was probably the best part of both of those movies, even if the they weren't so great in and of themselves.

2. Whoa. Robert Duvall has gradually and quietly become a crusty mo-fo.

3. "The Hole: Directed by Joe Dante" WTF. Hahahahahahaha. In 3D, no less. ;)

arendr

Jamie Foxx's problem is that he's not the kind of actor he wants to be. He's good at meek or slightly quirky characters. He flat out sucks at the tough guy roles that he so often takes. I mean, he's so unbelievable at it!

Matanuki

Matanuki on 10-10-2009 07:14 AM

Alright alright alright, I'm getting a little irked, if not mystified, by this peculiar trend. Jaimie Fox sucks in "tough guy" roles?.. So he sucked in Miami Vice, Jarhead, The Kingdom, and Any Given Sunday? Riiight..

Well. I call foul, beg pardon. And the burden of proof, I'm afraid, for such a sweeping and, to date unfounded, remark is on those making the outrageous claim...

Now of course the silence descends upon us, and the tumbleweed balls come rolling by in the yawning wind as the echo of illogic vitiates the already frivolous argument.

Bigbrother

Bigbrother on 10-10-2009 08:45 AM

With the exception of Jarhead which I haven't seen I'd say that's about right. Miami Vice was an atrocity of a movie, The Kingdom I barely remember because it was so vanilla and Any Given Sunday was pretty much a sub-par performance for everyone involved. It was really the first time I noticed that Al Pacino has given up acting and has started a career in yelling and he was STILL better in that movie than Foxx.

Gotta agree I like him in Collateral style roles, but in action he just doesn't carry the same credability.

Matanuki

Matanuki on 10-10-2009 09:57 AM

Where is this lack of credibility you speak of?! The Kingdom, while you might not have liked it, was a pretty sound film. And your description of it as "vanilla" still says nothing of Foxx's performance, which no doubt was on par with what was required of him in the role.

I'll be forever in disagreement with most of you on Miami Vice. A lot of people expected more of the same from the original show, hot pink suits, jerry curls, high collars. But Mann wisely updated the mythos for a more gritty, realistic take that acknowledged the changes in the world that have occurred since the original series ended. Can't please everyone no matter how good your work is.

And in the bottomless sea of vacuous sports films with nothing to say, Any Given Sunday stands as one of the better ones. One of the first indications, by the way, that Foxx had true acting talent beyond jokes and charisma.

So the burden, I'm afraid, is still not fulfilled. Love these movies or hate em, it has to be more than just fashionable to say that he "sucked" in them. And at this point, that's all this particular perspective seems to me; a fashionable trend.

arendr

arendr on 10-10-2009 10:11 AM

I guess we disagree, but I don't think I've ever believed him in any of those movies. He's absolutely fantastic in Collateral. I don't think he sucks at all. I just see an actor who isn't playing to his strengths.

Premo Beat

Premo Beat on 10-10-2009 04:37 PM

I dunno what all this dissing Any Given Sunday is about, but it needs to end. I thought it was a superb film all around with great performances and offered one of the only lifelike presentations of professional sports as the business behind the fanfare. Yes Pacino yelled and screamed and became somewhat of a caricature, but I still enjoyed his performance. You didn't believe Lawrence Taylor was a real football player? I thought Dennis Quaid did an incredible Brett Favre imitation as well. Foxx did a great job playing young Michael Vick, although a bit too intelligently.

Bigbrother

Bigbrother on 10-10-2009 05:32 PM

The only problem with that is Brett Favre wasn't the grizzled veteran in 1999 and Micheal Vick wasn't even in the league. That's the problem with the movie everyone was a predictable charicature, not one of them has the depth of a real person that could have made the movie what it tried so desperately to be. I think The Last Boyscout is actually a more interesting character study than Any Given Sunday even with all its blatantly fanciful elements.

Matanuki

Matanuki on 10-11-2009 04:39 AM

And that's one of the things I love to kid about you; your penchant for taking it too far and burying your own message. The Last Boyscout? Two problems here. One, The Last Boyscout IS NOT a football character study in any sense of the word. And two, football players generally are not deep people; by and large, they ARE charicatures. So, suppose I'm an actor and I get cast to play a tree. You gonna condemn me for being wooden? ;-)

Bigbrother

Bigbrother on 10-11-2009 10:11 AM

The guy who kills himself at the start of Boyscout didn't have some interesting problems? Damon Wayans as the ex-QB with a drug problem wasn't an interesting character? More interesting IMO than Foxx's incarnation.

Yes, Athletes aren't real people, they're just what we see in 30 second post-game interviews. If that were true, then the question becomes why even make a character driven movie about them in the first place? What I meant by the charicature thing was earlier in the thread you criticized all the other football movies for having nothing to say and basically doing the same things you're now praising Foxx and Stone for doing with this one. Burt Reynolds in Everybodies All America and The Longest Yard or even Tom Cruise in All the Right Moves. Much better football movies, though Cruise was still a bit green at that time.

First off, in relation to all of the spamming as of late on here. I think they need to go so far as to block the IP addresses of these spammers from accessing the site............................As far as movies are concerned, the reason why they keep making Saw films is because of people like me. I don't know what is wrong with me but I keep going to see them when they come out. The only one I have even liked was part one. The rest have steadily been crappier than the previous installment. It's so ridiculous anymore. Jigsaw is able to see into the future all of sudden to know that because of his torturing of one person, it will inspire the brother of the second cousin of the mother of the person's third grade teacher to become a new Jigsaw upon his death so he already has a tape ready for this person along with a prerecorded video which seems to play out like a live conversation with them. Even though the film will suck, I most likely will go and see Saw VI. Someone just please beat some sense into me now.
