Critics Consensus: Transformers: Dark of the Moon is Less Than Meets the Eye

Summary

This week at the movies, we've got robots in disguise (Transformers: Dark of the Moon, starring Shia LaBeouf and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley), a recession romance (Larry Crowne, starring Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts), and a royal mix-up (Monte Carlo, starring Selena Gomez and Leighton Meester). What do the critics have to say? Three films into the franchise, we pretty much know what we're getting with a Transformers movie: tons of hyperkinetic robot action, with little in the way of character development or coherent plotting. So it is with Transformers: Dark of the Moon; critics say this latest installment is a marked improvement over Revenge of the Fallen, but it's still an exercise in sensory overload that favors special effects over storytelling. To begin... To begin... How to start? I'm hungry. I should get coffee. Coffee would help me think. Maybe I should write something first, then reward myself with coffee. Coffee and a muffin. Okay, so I need to establish the themes. Maybe a banana-nut. That's a good muffin.

Oh, and also, Mr. Cage, your name is Nicolas, not NicKolas, so it should be Nic Cage and not Nick Cage there, buddy. Been drinking again, eh?

Saw Transformers and I liked it. The IMAX 3-D presentation was astounding. The effects were amazing and the 3-D wasn't arbitrary. Nothing really "popped out", depth to the screen was added which was a surprise. Didn't mind the story either, as long as there some sort of a plot line to go with the effects, all's well. And for having a run time over 2 1/2 hours, it felt shorter to me. To my surprise, I thoroughly enjoyed it. And I'm on team Whiteley, for someone who just has to stand there and be eye candy, she's good at it. I like her over Fox, who doesn't seem as nice as her, and Shia is just turning into a brat panning his own co-worker, and badmouthing the very franchise that made him a star, used to like the guy, now, not so sure. So yes overall I enjoyed TF3.

the critics aren't saying giant robots fighting makes a bad movies, they're trying to stand up for the audience more than we give them credit for. they're not saying "NO TRANSFORMERS MOVIES!" they're saying " PLEASE GIVE US BETTER TRANSFORMERS MOVIES"

did you even give a shit about the blonde girl in this one? or sam for that matter? or even the army? the whole scene with the worm robot tearing the building down had No fucking consequences in the long run. we care about the autobots vs the decepticons. the dumb slapstick and puns are so off-putting. the 90% from the users is just backlash at the critics for being hard on the series. you can't tell me you actually feel comfortable spending money on them every 2 years when you only get to see robots fighting a third of the time?

If you're a Transformers fan, then I do not see how you can praise Bay considering the degree to which he underuses the actual transformers in these movies. The amount of dialogue the Decepticons get in Dark of the Moon is pathetic. Megatron and Starscream are the survivors from the previous movies, and they literally have ten lines of dialogue between them and have outrageously underwhelming death scenes. It seemed like the only reason they were even brought back is so that Bay would have some Decepticons to destroy that did not look bland or generic.

Did anyone else notice the Michael Bay vs. Megan Fox Feud basically play out on screen? There were so many potshots at Fox that it was ridiculous. Rosie in general was paraded around to be everything Fox wasn't.

The car metaphor, the close-ups on her body, the background and praise they continuously gave to her character, and OMFG did you even notice that during the entire final act her face AND clothes were almost completely clean and that she had ran, scaled, and fallen around that entire city in SIX INCH PUMPS!!! Hell, she even deceived Megatron without receiving a scratch from him.

I know that Bay doesn't like Fox and that Fox was kind of a bratty bitch for being the eye candy of the series, but making Rosie, who's performance was, to me, surprisingly decent, into a completely untouchable angel was insane. Even Fox got a little dirty every now and then.

if the transformer movies were just turn your brain off entertainment than they would be fun, but it's obnoxious running time paired with the emotionally uninteresting human characters makes the series a headache. leonard nimoy, anthony tudyx, and john malkovich were completely wasted in this movie. if these movies were an hour and a half long with more robots and less shia, they would at least be fun.

I feel the same way, especially about the running time. Hugo Weaving was also wasted greatly as Megatron.

Aha. Like Brain B. said, I like those two versions of James Cameron as well. :P Titanic is my favourite movie and I was super excited for Avatar, but then it came out and underwhelmed me in the story department [the visuals were great though]. I don't even know where to rank Avatar anymore.
